Description

Pyramid tarps are called monopole shelters because they only require one pole to set up. The pole is usually placed inside the peak in the center of the pyramid, although it can also be slanted with the base off-center to provide more interior room. The peak itself is usually reinforced so the center pole doesn’t puncture it. Most peaks also include an air vent to release the water vapor and warm air that can cause internal condensation.

Another thing that we realised about the PYRAMID tent is that if we did add a few centimetres to our walking poles height we could effectively raise the outer flysheet slightly, allowing greater air flow into the tent should conditions warrant it. In fact, we ended up actually preferring our walking poles set at 125cm. This did two things: firstly it tensioned the inner tent slightly better and secondly it raised the flysheet slightly off the ground allowing even better ventilation. It was now becoming apparent to us just how versatile the PYRAMID could be. Despite their simple design, pyramid tents offer excellent performance in a wide range of environments. The steep walls and high peak help to shed wind and snow, making them a popular choice for winter camping and mountaineering. At the same time, the open floor plan and high ceiling provide plenty of space and comfort for campers, making them equally suitable for more relaxed camping trips, including kayak camping. III. The Design and Structure of Pyramid TentsConsider how easy the tent is to set up. Pyramid tents are generally easy to set up, but some models may be more complicated than others. If possible, try setting up the tent before you buy it. Choosing the right tent can significantly enhance your outdoor experience, and pyramid tents are a worthy contender for your consideration. Their unique design, characterized by a single central pole and steep walls, offers a blend of simplicity, durability, and versatility that is hard to beat. Stake out the front corners. The side baseline of the shelter should be tight. Watch the angle formed by the rear and side walls of the shelter at the rear corners and position the front corners so that the rear corners form 90-degree angles. The goal is to have a perfectly square/rectangle floor base. As viewed from overhead the corners and corner guylines form a perfect X shape right out to the stakes. N) SBW drop+wall+skirt. This is as for (J) but is applicable for a rectangular design with a shorter side. This one person PYRAMID tent features an inner tent and a flysheet, but unlike most small tents this ultralight tent does not come with tent poles. Instead, this tent is specifically designed for use with your walking/trekking poles. F) Usable LBL for ‘sleeping mat widths’. This is my estimate of the the number of sleeping mats that will fit side by side within this minum clearance length across the longest portion of the tent. The sleeping mat width is entered at line 4. Note: This computation only works correctly where Bell wall height (2.) does not exceed Pyramid sleeping clearance (1).Pyramid tents and tarps are prone to internal condensation just like any other single or double-walled tent and shelter. The best way to reduce or eliminate any internal condensation is to maintain as much airflow as possible. While many pyramid shelters have a vent in the peak, this isn’t usually sufficient by itself to vent moisture build-up. While sleeping with the front door rolled open in fair weather can be quite helpful, the best way to ensure good airflow is to maintain a wide air gap between the bottom edge of the tarp and the ground so breezes can pass through the tent. Lengthen the center pole a few inches to raise the peak, and stake out the base as normal. The least amount of overhead clearance is at the head and foot ends under the slanted walls. Interior Volume

Another survival feature of my tents is that I design them for comfortable high pitching with the bell wall or low pitching without the wall as a pure pyramid. This low mode is for survival camping in very strong winds when occasionally this can not be avoided. When pitched low, the surplus wall becomes a giant snow skirt. “Lastly, if conditions become so bad, the tent pole can be removed (if it has not already broken) and the tent can become a bothy bag shelter.” This is the same orange tent as shown in the first photo above. The tent design allows it to be pitched low as a pure pyramid in preparation for a big overnight blow in open country. The tent walls have become enlarged snow skirts. Pyramid tent panel grain orientation On the other hand, I have observed (somewhat late) that the conventional approach of, sewing pyramid tent panels, is to sew edges together bias-to-bias and straight-to-straight as in this hexagonal pyramid tent design. This may be the better approach as it should mean that the stretchy bias-grain seam can stretch naturally and the surrounding fabric can become taught by stretching in sympathy. They probably will need catenary curves for these seams to pitch well. The primary downside of this mid is in the configuration. The two interior trekking poles provide a stable design, but they are set up right in the middle of the tent. This relegates the prime real estate of its shelter to a strip in the middle, mostly used for gear storage. The Beta Light is best for those seeking a floorless pyramid tent with many applications across all seasons and environments. Note:The 183cm x 57cm Z-pad shown in the photos of the tent is not included, but is for illustration purposes only.
