Description

In general, try to surround the pain, placing the pads near the pain and just above it if possible. NeoTENS is a wireless, rechargeable and portable TENS machine – no wires at all to get tangled in bags or clothing. It offers 5 modes of use, each with 15 intensity settings so it is flexible to find to find the right treatment for you, whether that’s for acute and chronic pain or muscle stimulation that may be more suited to experienced users. Every time a tension headache comes on, I should write down what it was I was doing right before it happened. When you have finished using the machine for the day, carefully remove the pads from the skin and clean the skin with ordinary soap and water. Do not pull directly on the wires to remove the pads. If there is any redness or irritation from the pads or tape then the next time you use the machine use a different area of skin.

Companies selling TENS machines are listed below. Please note: inclusion on this list does not imply a recommendation by Versus Arthritis and neither is the list comprehensive. It's provided for ease of reference only.

What TENS is used for

Given that HF TENS is a more effective pain reliever, experts recommend that people apply the highest-intensity TENS that they can tolerate. Electrode placement TENS machines are available for different budgets and conditions, such as foot pain, period pain, and nerve pain. People with widespread pain often have a localised pain problem which can be helped through using a TENS machine, even if it doesn’t help their more widespread pain.

Using TENS is generally safe and does not have side effects. However, the adhesive pads can cause allergic reactions, but special nonallergic pads are available. Despite being hypoallergenic, the pads can aggravate very sensitive skin. Rubber pads with gel are an alternative which can be less irritant. If you get skin irritation, some people find the use of over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream can help manage this. You should not use TENS on areas of broken or irritated skin. Other less common uses include migraine headaches, period pains, sports injuries and sometimes (quite rarely) non-painful conditions such as tiredness, insomnia or dementia.Pulse rate: High frequency → 80-130Hz – stimulates the pain gate = short term. Low frequency → 2-5Hz – stimulates the opioid mechanism = longer term. Some of the TENS machines in our list also offer what’s known as EMS, which stands for electrical muscle stimulation. Various types of electrical impulses are sent to the muscles, depending on the programme selected. These signals make the muscles contract to retrain them, increase their effectiveness and improve their condition. It’s a particularly popular training and rehabilitation technique in sports. What kinds of physical condition is a TENS machine suitable for?

A physiotherapist or pain specialist may be able to loan you a TENS machine for a short period if they think it could help. Channels: TENS units with dual channels allow people to use each channel with different modes and intensities. Switch on the machine slowly and turn it up gradually until you feel a tingling sensation. The sensation needs to be quite strong but not uncomfortable. After a few minutes the sensation will start to drop away slightly. This is called accommodation. When this happens, turn the machine up slightly and then leave it for the rest of the time in use. Do not turn it up too high, as this can cause over-stimulation which may make pain worse. There should be no muscle contraction. In almost every situation, some form of stress causes these tension headaches. This could be mental stress, with chronically worrying about something or someone in life, or, it could be a physical stress in which the body is low on energy. The most common causes of tension headaches are: Certain skin types can be sensitive to the adhesive on the electrode pads, most of the pads we recommend are ‘hypoallergenic’ so less likely to cause a reaction.

Should I still keep taking my pain killing tablets?

In todays modern multitasking world, they aren’t only common, but rampart around the nation. Being the most common type of headache for adults in the United States, three quarters of the population have these types of headaches at some point during the year. A small, portable device that can zap away excruciating headaches is now available to anyone who needs it on the NHS. Intermittently during the day, during a rest break, perhaps in combination with relaxation techniques.
