Lauren Child MBE is an English author and illustrator. She was the UK Children's Laureate from 2017-19. The Clarice Bean series is a series of children's books written and illustrated by English author Lauren Child from 1999. The stories follow middle schooler Clarice Bean and her challenges navigating the complex ethical, social and philosophical questions children deal with at school and at home. This is such a cute book! Clarice Bean is such a funny little kid. She has her own perspective on things and I love all her little quirks. It got me into the holiday spirit! Everything goes really well for the first two days but then there is trouble when the pet guinea pig, Albert, escapes and a full scale hunt is on to find it; unfortunately things get broken in the process of looking. Then, for a little relaxation a game of football is played but that ends up with Minal having to go to hospital for treatment to an injury and when they return grandfather has disappeared. Betty Moody is Clarice Bean's best friend, and they do most things together. Clarice and Betty both love the Ruby Redfort series. Betty also loves dogs, and in the first book she received a dog from Clarice's grandad's best friend. She appears in the series wearing glasses. She and her parents traveled a lot, along with call-me-Mol and call-me-Cecil. In the last book, she moves to San Francisco because call-me-Mol goes to California for a vacation, but finds a job and decides to stay there. Clarice’s voice is that of a perceptive and astute child who comments with deadpan humour on the goings-on around her, highlighting the ridiculousness of adult behaviour, as well as the adolescent shenanigans of her older brother and sister, and the sheer irritation of little Minal. Clarice’s comical yet shrewd articulation of the child’s perspective can be compared with the work of Roald Dahl, who always empathised with the child’s experience of life and exposed adult unfairness and hypocrisy: Charlie’s efforts are not only creative and amusing, but are also evidence of how much he cares for his little sister.
