The magnitude of edits to the text is comparable to other historical diaries such as those of Katherine Mansfield, Anaïs Nin and Leo Tolstoy in that the authors revised their diaries after the initial draft, and the material was posthumously edited into a publishable manuscript by their respective executors, only to be superseded in later decades by unexpurgated editions prepared by scholars. In this brilliant sequel to The Diary of a Bookseller (2017), Bythell plays the misanthrope to perfection. Until I was eleven or twelve, I didn't realize there was a second set of labia on the inside, since you couldn't see them. I love-a the folded corners of books-a because it makes me wonder what caused the person to stop a-reading at this point?

There were also many very sad and poignant parts of the story where Shaun goes to purchase books (sometimes entire collections) from estates. Anne used the above-mentioned names for her annex-mates in the first volume, from 25 September 1942 until 13 November 1942, when the first notebook ends. I had to get used to his tone of voice which is very pessimistic and abrupt - but in a funny way I grew to find this tone of voice hilarious and endearing, and after all, Shaun Bythell is not wrong in a lot of the things he says. In 2013, a similar controversy arose in a 7th grade setting in Northville, Michigan, focusing on explicit passages about sexuality. At the beginning of each month, he makes some broader observations about the business, literature, and life in general.

Otto was not much happier at first with the second dramatization, written by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett. Secrecy came naturally to John le Carré, and there were some secrets that he fought fiercely to keep, nowhere more so than in his private life. The first major adaptation to quote literal passages from the diary was 2014's Anne, authorised and initiated by the Anne Frank Foundation in Basel. Each day the amount of money made through sales is recorded and it was so interesting to see this change from day to day, season to season.

Beyond that, the best that could be said is that sometimes she was charmingly weird, but oftentimes just plain weird - no charm included.

I also enjoyed Shaun discussing the books he's reading and the George Orwell quotes at the start of each month of the diary. At the start you can feel the winter chill in the old granite building, and as months pass you sense mounting excitement at preparations for the annual Book Festival (going on now) and the Scottish referendum. A most unseemly battle over the legacy of Anne Frank (In feud with Amsterdam museum, copyright holders are using final year before diaries enter the public domain to push a play, a TV docudrama, films, apps and an archive)". I liked the little excerpts from George Orwell which proceeded every month too, as they provided some cohesiveness to the structure of the book and made it feel less like a traditional diary.
