On the far shore of Llyn Idwal, a boulder field leads up to the Devil’s Kitchen 1. Cwm Idwal and The Devil’s Kitchen Loop Walk

At 24 he became the head chef and partner at Harvey’s with a kitchen staff including a young Gordon Ramsay, who he allegedly made cry. Visiting Llyn Idwal is a must-do when you’re in Snowdonia. And hiking up Devil’s Kitchen to Llyn y Cwn is the cherry (a big cherry!) on the cake. If you only have one day to spend in Snowdonia, I recommend this hike. The views you are rewarded with across Cwm Idwal and the towering mountains are utterly stunning. And with a little bit of very easy scrambling added in, it makes for an amazing, adventurous day out for everyone! indeed, after a point, they become dirge-like in their predictability. Why, I asked myself midway through this book—right around the time that my discomfort at White's antics gave way to boredom—would readers, much less diners, want to be in the company of such a gregariously antisocial character? As is the case with virtually any autobiography, the answer is that we are seeking a window into the subject's soul, no matter how, well, unsavory that subject might be. His book, unfortunately, provides no such insights, offering readers little more than a continual, atonal concerto of scuffles with customers and insults to co-workers. Please, I wanted to say to White as I was reading, stifle all that alpha male stuff and just cook. (May) Good 1980s restaurant food WAS memorable, though mainly because of the exuberant decorative extremes it hit before a modicum of sense reasserted itself. MPW had (still has?) that subtle sense ‘in spades’; as glimpsed throughout this book. His astute ‘blink and you miss it’ observation as to how Albert Roux “touched the dishes with his eyes” (pg.55) before they were sent to table, speaks absolute volumes about quality. Today, I am intensely saddened, dislike, and indeed actively avoid restaurants where the chef whose name advertises and prices the restaurant is not to be routinely found in that kitchen. This was our final day in Snowdonia during our two-week stay there. And what an amazing way to conclude it! Not only did we re-visit the most stunning Llyn Idwal that holds a special place in my heart (since we had first, literally, stumbled upon it four years ago) but we also hiked up Devil’s Kitchen and discovered Llyn y Cwn. And to top it all off, we even bumped into a legend. A legend named Megan Hine that I want my kids to look up to and learn from. This hike was a special mother & son hike which we’ll cherish forever.

This great tune comes from Scotland. It is played in many ways and in several keys. It was originally composed by William Ross, who was piper to Queen Victoria from 1854 to 1891. Listening to strathspeys helps with learning them because of their different rhythm, and tapping your foot to the melody instead of straight 4/4 helps in creating the heavy hold/cut stuff, though it can be confusing sometimes. ↳ The world's most celebrated chefs are divided into two opposing camps these days. In one, there are the do-gooder humanists like Alice Waters of Berkeley's Chez Panisse. In the other, there are the self-avowed holy terrors like Britain's Marco Pierre White, author of this plodding autobiography, co-written with James Steen and originally published in the U.K. in 2006 under the untoward title White Slave Once we reached Llyn y Cwn, my son declared that he wanted to also “hike up that mountain” pointing to Glyder Fawr on the left. I decided that we would save that for another day, however, as the weather was turning and we weren’t prepared for a full-day hike with sufficient provisions. I’m all for adventuring and exploring new routes or mountains – even spontaneously – but safety is always my no. 1 priority. So on that day, it was the right decision for us. The mountains will always be there for us to return to… The Descent via Devil’s KitchenA moving, unaffected, delightfully honest book. He may have been one of the most disagreeable bastards ever to command a kitchen brigade, but in the same guileless, unfiltered way in which he cursed out sous-chefs, he's told one hell of a story." - David Kamp, New York Times Book Review The] story of the working-class boy from Leeds who grows up and becomes a world-class chef, is fascinating, especially in our food and chef-obsessed world. Revealing...a juicy tale. Upon first glance, I thought White was simply a chef, and not able to write as fluently as his contemporaries (i.e. Bourdain). However, with the aid of James Steen, I was pleasantly mistaken. From the Visitor’s Centre there is a well made stone path leading to Cwm Idwal. The path begins with a beautifully forged metal gate and picturesque waterfall. DEVIL IN THE KITCHEN is Marco White's memoir. It's the story of a boy from a financially strapped working class home in Leeds. It chronicles the distress of a boy who lost his mother at age 6, who feared the loss of his father from terminal cancer four years later, who was estranged from his father in late adolescence and who floundered through two unsuccessful marriages and nearly a dozen irretrievably damaged relationships in pursuit of his dream.
