Matteo Scalera's artwork is so perfectly suited to Millar's storytelling style that it's almost literally mind-blowing. A violent story of revenge and retribution, with enough smarts and heart along the way to round it out and stop it from being just another bland and plot deprived action movie. Roland goes on a spree across the world, leaving a trail of blood on his tail and the agency wants him dead. King was a distinguished MI6 operative, and when he retired from the service he maintained close ties to the organization, and even made himself rich. Seriously; the art is absolute gold and some of those action sequences had me staring at panels for extended periods of time as I contemplated just exactly how the hell he achieved such visuals.

I can’t wait for people to see it and wanted to share a couple of the images we’ve been putting together for the comic-book side of the project. No amoral or unscrupulous bigwig in any high political office, organized religion and/or the entertainment industry is safe as the ailing King hops the globe to 'terminate with extreme prejudice' using his deadly expertise.

Given his limited time on Earth, King has set his sights on taking down as many of the planet's corrupt “presidents and kings” as possible. The way that he draws action also has an undeniable dynamism to it, which works very well in this issue. Throw in some 'Unforgiven' and 'Old Man Logan' and you have a potent mix of violence, intrigue, and retribution.

Now he knows where all the bodies are buried and has nothing to lose when he turns his guns on everyone who ever made a buck creating the mess we're in right now. The artwork of Matteo Scalera and Giovanna Niro is one of the foremost reasons for the book's cinematic impression, where even the most brutal moments have an artistic fervor to them. Five stars for the books I totally live, and one star for the books that aren’t just bad but actually bug me for committing some narrative sin (usually, cynical half-assery or a repugnant view of humanity in general). Contradictory wanking over free-range superpower stuff so you can then pillory free-range superpower stuff? The series is also written by Mark Millar, who we know is no stranger to the spy genre due to his successful The Secret Service: Kingsman franchise.

Upon starkly realizing in his waning days that his puppet masters - those supposedly patriotic powers-that-be that regularly handed him assignments - are lately just as corrupt or evil as his former targets, he sets out to clean house in an international sense. At the same time I really enjoyed his run through Marvel’s Ultimate universe, with a few notable exceptions (see above). I’m the first to admit he is an incredibly dynamic story teller, and he clearly has an audience that loves everything he does.Sir Roland King is the King of "Take This Job and Shove It""invest in this one for the storyline and the art! He won the Distinguished Service Cross, along with a chest full of medals for valor and initiative in the Korean War.

So it was with a great deal of trepidation that I read the first issue of Millar’s newest title King of Spies. Perfect execution by Scalera, we really feel the weight of it all and the action does feel relentless, Sir Roland King truly represents the calm in the eye of the storm. Musician Toby Keith once sang "this big dog will fight when you rattle his cage", and with King of Spies a fierce hellhound is off the chain and gunning for those who have escaped their reckoning for way too long. A seventh-grade dropout, he created his own black-ops empire, commanding a small army of hand-selected spies, deploying his own makeshift navy, and ruling over it as a clandestine king, with absolute power over life and death. He is completely alone, with no family or true friends beyond other former spies he sees at his social club.As the authorities grow frustrated, they decide to fight fire with fire, engaging the services of Atticus King, Roland's son and rival. There’s greed and corruption at every level, untouchable despots he was forbidden to go near and a system he just doesn’t believe in any more. King of Spies invests in the validity of King's anger far more than Skyfall did with Silva, depicting him as a hero on a righteous quest.
