Today, decades after their heyday, the prolific, ever-evolving Scandinavian modernists continue to amaze and delight, and interior designers all over the world use their pieces to bring warmth to any given space.

Add different textures and colors to your table with dinner plates and pitchers of ceramic and silver or a porcelain lidded tureen, a serving dish with side handles that is often used for soups. Although porcelain and ceramic are both made in a kiln, porcelain is made with more refined clay and is more durable than ceramic because it is denser. The latter is ideal for statement pieces — your tall mid-century modern ceramic vase is a guaranteed conversation starter. And while your earthenware or stoneware is maybe better suited to everyday lunches as opposed to the fine bone china you’ve reserved for a holiday meal, handcrafted studio pottery coffee mugs can still be a rich expression of your personal style. The glass pig decanter is hand-made at the Angels’ Share Glass studio and has a stopper for the nose so the drink can be poured out and later refilled. rosslynchapel.com Visitors on Calton Hill watch the sun setting over Edinburgh (Alamy) 17. See sunset from Calton Hill Edinburgh, situated right on the North Sea coast, is a chef’s dream, with waters for just-harvested shellfish, fields for seasonal foraging and herb gardens in the foothills of the Pentlands. Do it like the locals and book ahead for top tables on the Shore, or further afield in trend-setting Leith and the West End. Places to top your list are Restaurant Martin Wishart, Fhior, The Little Chartroom and Aizle. Gin first appeared in Britain in the early 17th century. It was produced on a large scale by Dutch and Flemish distillers in the mid-17th century, and was initially sold in pharmacies as a treatment for a wide range of medical ailments – anything from stomach problems to gout! However, it was the ‘Glorious Revolution’ of 1688, when William of Orange took the British throne, that catapulted gin into the popular culture. All are handmade and hand filled in our Bridge of Allan glass blowing studio and feature a cork stopper for the nose, delicate pink ears, and subtle blue eyes. They’re a bit of fun and we’re delighted that shoppers in Harvey Nichols will be able to treat themselves to a quality Scottish product. Accordingly, Whistlepig and their retailers must insist that no one attempt to create or enact any stunt or activity performed with this bottle, including but not limited to selfies sipping straight from the posterior.” Our Pink Gin Pig is filled with 50ml/5cl of Pink Gin at 37.5% ABV. 65 - 70mm diameter. It is a miniature measure of gin.

Whiskey scientist Liz Rhoades commented: “With zero generations of tradition behind us, we’re only looking forward. This is the story of the next decade of Whistlepig – one that will bring new frontiers beyond rye, even bigger age statements, stupendous complexity and undoubtedly more pig hijinks.

Each nation produced exceptional talents in all areas of the applied arts, yet each had its forté. Sweden was home to Greta Magnusson Grossman and Bruno Mathsson — creators of the classic Grasshopper lighting series and Berlin daybed, respectively — but the country excelled most notably at ceramics. In the 1920s at the great Gustavsberg porcelain manufactory, Wilhelm Kåge introduced pieces in the Scandinavian style based on influences from folklore to Cubism; his skills were passed on to his versatile and inspired pupils Berndt Friberg and Stig Lindberg. Invite serveware from around the world to join your table settings. For special occasions, dress up your plates with a striking Imari charger from 19th-century Japan or incorporate Richard Ginori’s Italian porcelain plates into your dining experience. Celebrate the English ritual of afternoon tea with a Japanese tea set and an antique Victorian kettle. No matter how big or small your dining area is, there is room for the stories of many cultures and varied histories, and there are plenty of ways to add pizzazz to your meals.

The gentle, organic contours that are typical of Scandinavian design appear in the furnishings and decor created by Danish, Finnish and Swedish designers not as a stylistic gesture, but rather as a practical, ergonomic — and, as importantly, elegant — response to the human form.

Your dining room table is a place where stories are shared and personalities shine — why not treat yourself and your guests to the finest antique and vintage glass, silver, ceramics and serveware for your meals?

Following on from the ' Gin Craze' of the early eighteenth century when half of the London drinking establishments were gin bars, and later when the aristocracy of the Victorian era had ' Gin Palaces' there was a desire for specially made jugs and decanters to display how wealthy the household was. Many of these were made from hand blown glass and were known as Gin Pigs. Our Gin Pigs are also inspired by the two gin pigs on display at National Trust property, Brodie Castle, seeing these two large jugs caught our imagination and our design of the Gin Pig was born. The brand has published a tongue-in-cheek disclaimer along with the release that reads: “This whiskey release features self-deprecating humour created under the supervision of professionals. We make no apologies for this release either expressly or otherwise.
