Description

The bay of Scapa Flow lies with the Orkney Mainland to the North and South Ronaldsay and Hoy to the East and West respectively. The bay is of considerable historic significance, having been a naval base for the British fleet during both World Wars. During the First World War, the Grand Fleet employed the bay as their Northern base and during the Second World War a German U-Boat entered the bay and subsequently sank the HMS Royal Oak. Nose: some wet cardboard up front, as well as gravel and wet plaster. Then some meadow flowers come out, with citrus fruits, green apples and dusty malt. Hints of pine needles with crushed walnuts. Light mint. Overall it stays pretty green. You can buy a bottle of the Scapa Glansa in Norway at NOK 625 ( 7852901), in Sweden at SEK 399 ( 86963), and in the UK at around GBP 35. In terms of pricing it is only a fraction more expensive than the Scapa Skiren. Mouth: very soft, not to say watery. Mid-palate a nice fruitiness appears (more crisp apple and juicy pear) with lemon peels and a bit of honey and butterscotch sweetness. Then malty notes appear, as well as some plankish wood and green tea.

The smoke is dense but not overwhelming, allowing the other flavours to show themselves fully. It is soft and warm, making this the perfect malt for cold, winter nights. Scapa Glansa tries to be different with a peated profile which comes from a re-used barrel rather than from peated barley. For myself this is a very disappointing dram. My feeling as I sipped the whisky was that the producers knew that the spirit was not developed fully and decided to finish the whisky in ex-peated whisky barrels to cover over the weak spots. It really doesn’t work as the peat drawn from the barrel is more of a mild smoke that blurs but does not hide the undeveloped whisky. Scapa Glansa opens with a strong nose, full of fruit and sweetness. It has tangy citrus fruits alongside subtle orchard fruits with a nice crisp edge.

Both whiskies on the table today are NAS expressions (“ageless” they say). Yet they’re not particularly cheap.Nose: Vanilla with a little bit of an attitude. Somewhat dusty. With time it turns more sweet. Light notes of icing sugar, and hints of red berries. Really appealing. No hints of smoke really, but there's some chocolate and mild coffee notes here.
