She's just starting to settle, to find her feet, and has made some good friends, when her past finds her, and everyone knows what she ran from. Grieving the death of her father, 16-year-old Anna Clark and her mother move from England to a Scottish fishing village to distance themselves from online slut-shaming that occurred in Anna's past. The book talks about the pressures young girls undergo - for example, boys sending nude photos around and the way girls are pressured to be just sexy enough, but not too much. I was in no way expecting to like this story as much as i did, and i can honestly say this is one of the best novels i've read in a long time.

Alongside the main plot of the book, there was a nice healthy romance too between Anna and Robin, and also showed the importance of friendship too which I liked. In particular, I thought the bond between Anna and her mother was portrayed in a subtle but affecting manner. This is such a disturbing and fascinating fact and I loved the way the author seamlessly wove in the story of a young woman persecuted pretty much entirely because she was a women at the wrong time.Pip has known and liked Sal since childhood; he’d supported her when she was being bullied in middle school. Monans, they’re trying to escape both their grief over Anna’s father’s death and their horror at the severe slut-shaming she experienced at her old school. Overall a fantastic touching novel that is super relevant with its feminist themes and ideas about the internet, the trolls who use it and what can become of this.

It's one of those books that makes you see red because what the main character, Anna, is facing makes you so angry especially because you know something just like that happens on a regular basis around the world. She received the 2014 Oxford Internet Institute Internet and Society Award alongside Tim Berners Lee. But Bates has done a brilliant job in creating backgrounds for most (if not all) of the main characters who are involved in Anna’s story, while keeping Anna’s own past slightly secretive. It was a scene where Anna and Alisha were talking about love and Anna was extremely shocked when Lish revealed she was in love with a girl.

I would most definitely recommend this book to anyone who hasn’t already read it, no matter their age or sex. Juxtaposing past and present so that historical evil bleeds into contemporary reality is not a new concept in young adult literature. You might think you’ve extinguished it but one creeping, red tendril, one single wisp of smoke is enough to let it leap back into life again. I loved the relationship Anna had with her mother-it was complex and maybe not entirely healthy, but really showed that they both cared.
