I found it fascinating to trace the origin and different versions of well-known tales, such as Cinderella. This collection contains lyrical tales, bloody tales and hilariously funny and ripely bawdy stories from countries all around the world - from the Arctic to Asia - and no dippy princesses or soppy fairies. Two orphaned peasant children, Pia and Enzio, find a pouch, stolen from the King and dropped in their path. Jack is a thief who steals from the ogre (not retrieving his father's possessions as I've read in other stories).

It's hard to know how to review collections like this because in my mind they are as much data as they are entertainment. Or you can find more princesses, dragons and magic bursting out of the pages over in our fairy tale collection. If you are easily disgusted or have a somewhat black and white view, this book is perhaps not for you.
