About this deal

The printing of the text is inconsistent, fine on most pages but over-inked on some, which doesn't look great but is at least still readable.

But if you continue moving forward, no matter how you feel or what you think, if you put one foot in front of the other and repeat this action without contemplating whether you’ll be able to do it until the end, you have a chance to throw that ring into the burning abyss and see a new, magnificent dawn. it was a rarefied and highly personal world, yet it proved a fertile soil from which his great fantasy novels were to grow. Lord of the Rings takes place a number of years later and sees Frodo Baggins burdened with a ring found by Bilbo on his adventure. New Reset Edition, with coloured frontispieces, full-page coloured illustrations in the text, smaller line drawings, and endpaper maps in red and black; red cloth, upper boards blocked in gilt with 'JRRT' monogram, gilt backs, a fine copy in publisher's illustrated board slip-case.Having the latest updated text is a bonus, albeit most of the changes are grammatical or upper v lower case.

Well, what can I say… Thirty years later, I “swallowed” the trilogy in about a month – and it took me so long only because I was reading it during a very busy time and could dedicate to it only short moments before bedtime. I have mentioned the nice font size, which is complemented by matching colour text (to the binding) – green for The Hobbit and red for LOTR – for chapter headings (including the first capital letter of the chapter text), header titles and page numbering. Well over 100 million copies of its many editions have been sold around the world, and occasional collectors' editions become prized and valuable items of publishing. I guess, for many it might not be the most exciting part of the book, but for me, reading it felt like I’ve made that impossible climb myself.

If a book reaches a wider audience, there will always be those who love it and those who absolutely hate it. Steeped in unrivalled magic and otherworldliness, its sweeping fantasy and epic adventure has touched the hearts of young and old alike. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. When two hobbits were crawling up Mount Doom, forced to leave more and more behind – Sam’s beloved kitchen gear and remnants of hope that they can succeed – my lips felt parched and my heart hollow.

However, if like me you have other Alan Lee editions of these books that have the larger glossy illustrations then you can simply look at those at your leisure. A Must Read for anyone (all ages) who enjoys fantasy adventure without limits, yet strangely plausible. Successive generations have been spellbound by the exploits of Frodo, Gandalf and their comrades as they journey towards Mordor to do battle with the Dark Lord Sauron. Alan Lee’s illustrations are a brilliant edition in both The Hobbit and the LOTR, and I think they are perfectly fine even though they are not on glossy paper. His books have been translated into over 80 languages and have sold many millions of copies worldwide. This new edition includes all 50 of Alan Lee's beautiful watercolour paintings that have been newly scanned by the artist himself, together with his stunning frontispiece painting that appears in full, for the very first time, as a three-page foldout sheet. Since they were first published, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings have been two books people have treasured. Alan Lee was invited to illustrate the centenary edition of The Lord of the Rings , which led to further Tolkien editions, including The Hobbit and the three ‘Great Tales’: The Children of Húrin , Beren and Lúthien and The Fall of Gondolin .

This beautiful illustrated edition was just another excuse to re-read what is in my opinion, the greatest story told in our time. The goods do not need to be in their original packaging however in a sellable condition, and at your own cost and risk.If a refund or reimbursement is payable to you, we will transfer the money using the same method originally used by you to pay for your purchase. Tolkien had seen her sketches and was so impressed that his executors gave special permission for Fraser to interpret them for these Folio editions. Featuring ink-sprayed edges and two maps of Middle-earth, this special edition is illustrated throughout in colour by Tolkien himself.
