The Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S Lens is a versatile all-in-one zoom lens for Nikon's Z-mount system, which is well-suited to a range of photography styles including landscapes, portraits, and street photography.

You can photograph almost any everyday subject, from landscapes to portraits, if your lens covers both wide angles and moderate telephotos. Maybe this was partly because I already owned the first gen F mount G version of the lens, which I could use with the FTZ adapter. Nikon’s ARNEO Coat and Nano Crystal Coat keep images clear by combatting ghosting and flare caused by incidental light coming from any direction. Cropping a 70mm shot down to achieve the angle of view of 120mm would throw away 66% of the pixels, reducing a 45MP shot to a mere 15MP.The lens extends further by an additional 6cm to reach a total length of 18cm when fully zoomed out to 120mm. That’s why I see myself recommending the Nikon Z 24-120mm f/4 S to a lot of photographers in the coming years.

Specular highlights are a downside, though—if you catch street lights in portraits or raindrops behind a fallen leaf (above) you'll spot the characteristic onion skin effect in the bokeh.Skip the 24-70 f4; you’re getting a much more capable lens in the 24-120mm f4 S for the little extra you’d pay. I've used nearly every digital camera system under the sun, but for my personal work, I love the slow-paced nature of large format film. As usual I’ve rated the features with a [+] (or [++]), when it’s better than average or even state of the art, a [0] if it’s standard or just average, and [-] if there’s a disadvantage. I will say that the out of focus areas seem to be just a little less "busy" and distracting than I've seen on other lenses at the telephoto lengths, but some will find it still a bit on the busy side. Nikon included a dedicated manual focus ring closer to the lens mount, leaving the control ring customizable for additional features like aperture or ISO control.
