After a lifetime believing that she has been a positive influence on those around her, she comes to realise that she has been deceiving herself. S. Forester comedy comedy of manners comic fiction comic novels Compton Mackenzie countryside detective fiction detective novel detective story domestic fiction Elizabeth von Arnim Ethel M. Absent in the Spring was the most poignant for me; the main character has this incredible, life-altering revelation about what kind of person she really is, and the revelation just kind of trickles away without changing anything. More particularly, can she come to see how her children don’t care for her at all and her husband has been in love with another woman?Dust jacket has nick losses to spine tips otherwise no chipping, tearing or creasing, slight wear to spine tips, almost no wear to front flap crease (just at flap crease corners), wear to left/right on spine (common defect as this is a VERY FRAGILE dust jacket consistent with poor WWII paper quality), hint of edge wear, no spine sun fading, no color rubbing to front panel, almost no dust rubbing to white panel, no soiling or staining. Having hastily travelled by air for part of the way to Iraq, she is taking a slower, overland route home.

El final me dejó algo molesta, tenía esperanzas y quería otro final, pero mientras más lo pienso más creo que es el final perfecto. In this book, she suffers an epiphany and comes face to face with her true self as well as the reality of her life; the resolution is somewhat surprising, but when it happens it feels inevitable. From 1944, this is the third of six novels Agatha Christie published under the alias Mary Westmacott. The book has given me greater satisfaction than some of her mystery novels (and I’m saying this as a fan of the author and a mystery lover). Having read all the books she’s brought and exhausted all her writing paper, Joan is forced into days of idleness which led her inexorably into self analysis. What they share with her other fiction is Christie's gift for sharp observations about people, the ambitions that drive them, their relationships, and the conflicts that erupt between them. Perhaps it’s a pity she didn’t pursue the different approach, but she may only have had material enough for one book.

Her meeting with Blanche, her childhood friend, before being stranded puts her in a contemplative mood.

Dust Jackets are not guaranteed and when still present, they will have various degrees of tear and damage. An early encounter with a former schoolmate provided a foreshadowing for the major part of the novel: ‘If you had nothing to do but think about yourself for days and days, you might find out about yourself. Instead it focuses on a middle-aged woman stuck in an isolated rest house in the desert for days, waiting for a train to take her back to civilisation. It had been quite easy to fill her life with unimportant trivialities that left her no time for self-knowledge. Agatha Christie was always prolific, often finishing a book within a few months, but Absent in the Spring was written in just three days.
