About this deal

Everything about it was so carefully crafted, from the story to the characters to the writing techniques. A stylish, twisty psychological thriller ― Daily Express --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. If 'The Girl Before' were a clean delineated Rothko, then 'Believe Me' is a frenetic Jackson Pollock. It started so well, Claire, a wannabe actress studying at the impressive Actors' Studio in NYC, is working as a honeytrap to elicit some income.

Whilst the plot is pretty implausible, it's still a very exciting story that I just couldn't stop listening to. This book has a very interesting variety of characters, we have elegant and artistic actors; classy, intelligent and very poetic victim’s husband, and like always, insightful police. I have to confess that the lawyer in me worried her way through the honey trap scenes but they’re crucial. There are rules that need to be followed, the spouse withe the wandering eye needs to proposition her, and she needs to get it all on tape. While this book didn’t carry the “the next Gone Girl” endorsement, I did see some reviews that compared it to other darker psychological books like those listed above.

This was a group read and fortunately my fellow sisters were kind enough not to make me feel stupid when I excitedly told them that Baudelaire was a real live poet! One inarguable strength of this novel was the way in which this author established and used an unreliable narrator. The story had some great twists and turns, leading up to an intense and gripping ending that I never saw coming! Sometimes it feels, that the plot is slowing down, but that is just a very creatively incorporated “quiet before the storm” phase. The story uses the poetry of Baudelaire and particularly his Les Fleur du Mal, with some of the poems being quite graphic in their brutality. The plot is excellent but this might be a book to avoid if you're averse to some graphic descriptions of horror. I absolutely loved the complexity of the characters and unexpected turns and twists, that is why, I strongly recommend to read this book, and I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did.
