When I first moved to Tokyo, I tried to overextend myself, thinking: ‘I mustn’t lose to the people from Tokyo! The Japan Society hosted the premiere in New York on October 6, 2023, in advance of screenings at North American theaters on October 8 and 9. Which is why the music itself is often downplayed, while the appeal of these types of mangas is to see how music can affect people and their life.

This award-winning manga from Shinichi Ishizuka, compiled into five omnibus volumes for its English debut, is a pitch-perfect drama about the power of music. It takes many chapters before he graduates from his hometown and sets off to find his fortune in Tokyo, although the manga continues beyond the events of this film, catapulting Dai out of Japan and off to the United States, where he finds a whole new set of adventures at the prestigious real-world Berklee College of Music. This book is fantastic and the panel art is absolutely stunning, I had to compare my tenor sax to the pictures because i was so impressed! Jazz musicians, however, seem unanimous, even down to the use of performance capture from well-known players – the saxophone pieces in the film were all based off recordings from professional musician Tomoaki Baba, who claimed the hardest part for him was investing his music with the character of Dai, as he knew him from the manga, rather than his own musical personality.

It is more difficult to represent scenes of musical performance with traditional drawing, it requires a lot of time and a particular effort. I used to play the violin back in high school, I was in advanced orchestra even though I barely knew how to read music sheets! Music is something beautiful and you don’t have to play an instrument to truly feel it, so what if the chords make no sense ?Blue Giant, in its anime form, is merely a fragment of the long-running manga series by Shinji Ishizuka, which began over a decade ago in the pages of Big Comic magazine. Blue Giant (stylized in all caps) is a Japanese jazz-themed manga series written and illustrated by Shinichi Ishizuka [ ja].

A fourth series, set in New York City and titled Blue Giant Momentum, began serialization in Big Comic on July 25, 2023.It’s really very long and delicate, so it also allowed us to keep control over the quality of the image. In North America, Seven Seas Entertainment announced the English release of Blue Giant in February 2020. It ranked 41st on the 2018 "Book of the Year" list by Da Vinci magazine, and ranked 45th on the 2019 list. Written and illustrated by Shinichi Ishizuka [ ja], Blue Giant was serialized in Shogakukan's Big Comic from May 10, 2013, [3] [4] to August 25, 2016.

Each of them has a different philosophical approach to their music – Shunji just wants to be with his friends, Yukinori wants to be the best, but Dai wants to learn on the job and become a better musician. A wonderful ambassador of jazz, Blue Giant is a great success in Japan and France, where the first volume has been published in 2018 by Glénat. From his first music theory lessons to decisive encounters, with the first chaotic concerts, sacrifices and doubts, Dai will have to reconcile his unconditional love of music with his friends, family and work. I’d Carry my tenor and alto saxophones on my back every day no matter the weather and practice until it was dark out learning anything I could get my hands on.Despite that, this manga has the most memorable panels and is well-drawn in the most important moments. Blue Giant has become something of a jazz emissary in Japan, with its manga releases coming tied to music lesson promotions, a compilation CD of jazz greats picked out by the artist Ishizuka, and even a tie-up with Brooks Brothers, based on one of Dai’s most famous quotes: “A white shirt is proof you’re a jazz man! Ishizuka's page-turner applies the gung-ho spirit of action manga to an unlikely subject: jazz music. After that, as he continues his daily practice, the master of the jazz bar where Dai has appeared introduces Yui, a music class instructor. People probably wouldn't know the magic of jazz and the point of playing saxophone for hours in the snow, but people will understand his drive and his love for the art.
