About this deal

The relationship between Crowl, Spinoza, and the Custodian Navradaran is fraught with mistrust and wariness, but it is also a solid element of the novel, much like everything else. Well, when you’re talking an about extraordinary race of human beings who have evolved to have this Ability, as it’s referred to, and put in a 20th century context, the place you must start with, as Simmons does, are the Nazis and the horrors of the Holocaust primarily seen through his protagonist and Holocaust survivor, Dr.

Perhaps it was the dark forests of his homeland that he thought of as he stalked his human quarry through the sterile streets of Los Angeles. Or maybe it’s just a sign that I’m getting older and am better able to remember things from my dim and distant past than what happened last week. The first half of the novelette makes up chapter 1 of the novel, while the second half forms chapter 3. The characters through out the novel are fantastic and for the most part a lot of fun to read about. After all, Saul has been on a quest for 40-some years after surviving the Holocaust to find the Oberst and kill him. A sheet of black filled his vision as hundreds of birds dived at the cottage, pointed beaks thrust forward. Willi takes over the "use and hunt" aspect of the "game" and suggests taking the game global—which he and the televangelist support, and Barent and Kepler don't.

Without the Ability, even those who do feed on life cannot savor the flow of emotions in stalker and victim, the total exhilaration of the attacker who has moved beyond all rules and punishments, the strange, almost sexual submission of the victim in that final second of truth when all options are canceled, all futures denied, all possibilities erased in an exercise of absolute power over another.

This book isn’t going to be for everyone, but it is very original, action-packed, immersive and evocative. One of the few major reinventions of the vampire concept, on a par with Jack Finney's Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Richard Matheson's I Am Legend, and Stephen King's Salem's Lot.

Saul becomes a willing pawn in the "game," having trained himself with self-hypnosis for months to memorize as many details as possible of the lives of death camp victims and survivors of the holocaust so that when Willi attempts to control him, the memories of others will confuse Willi in a way that will gain Saul a few seconds to attack and kill the old man. A determined agent of the Holy Ordos, Spinoza is one of the highlights of the narrative and quite the contrarian as it turns out since she doesn’t always take Crowl at his word and always ready to challenge his views. Through this we also learn much of the history of the Imperium from ten thousand years ago, the Heresy and the Crusade itself. But all in all, The Carrion Throne is a great start to a new series, full of exciting new characters and situations that I’m very eager to learn more about. There Tony Harod is interrogated under drugs to find out as much as possible about the Island Club and the Ability in general—getting info from EEG readouts as Tony tries in vain to control Natalie to escape. After that, Saul and Natalie retreat, as it were, to Israel to figure out a way to not only bring down Melanie, but the entire Island Club.

The three old mind vampires Willi, Nina and Melanie has been playing a game since before world war II – who can make the most people kill themselves or other people, in the most interesting ways. Before Saul chokes him out, even before the chess match commences, Simmons describes Willi from the point-of-view of Harod looking at him, and the description is perhaps the best line of the entire novel and tells you almost everything you need to know about this epic book, “In a second’s vivid, hallucinatory vision, Harod realized that Willi Borden, Wilhelm von Borchert, was dead, that Harod was staring at a corpse, and that it was not just a skull smiling at him like something sculpted from sharp-edged bone, but a skull that was a repository of millions of other skulls with a shark-toothed maw that breathed out the stink of the charnel house and the mass grave. Again, especially now without the help of a third person in Gentry, I was left wondering how they heck are they going to take these things on?

The evening light was sending its final, horizontal rays through the stained glass panels of the bay windows and it cast a red hue on Willi as he stood next to the oak cupboard. They eventually kill Haines just outside Lake Elsinore, CA and escape, lost in a stolen car along fire service roads until ending up in Fallbrook, California. Carrion Comfort is one of those books that are so well written and so gripping, that you just have to keep on reading.
