About this deal

In real life, many people who were severely abused by their parents as children admit that they still love their parent. The most recent theatrical adaptation, Goodnight Mister Tom, won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Entertainment. However, I would go the city without question, because if the countryside is made up of the gobshites from this novel, I would happily face death in the city. Will has endured some ghastly abuse at the hands of his mother, the description of which is now burned into my brain. I read so many children's books these days and now realise how high the benchmark for real literature can and should be for children.

Not to mention the fact that a dog carries germs, and could easily make an already vulnerable child even sicker, or possibly die. While pursuing an acting career, Magorian became interested in children’s books, writing her first novel for young readers (Goodnight, Mr.To celebrate the 40 th anniversary of GOODNIGHT MISTER TOM, the classic story is publishing in a stunning clothbound hardback edition on 6 th May 2021. When you read the book you quickly see how it could not have been written much before the 1980s, although even then it would have been quite ground-breaking; it deals with child abuse, amongst other things, pretty remarkable in a children’s book. My favourite part of Good night Mr Tom is the part when Willie was writing his name as it made me imagine what they were doing inside my head. I have to say, along with To Kill A Mockingbird, and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, this book is one of my all-time favourites.

Squishy Circuits begin with two types of pliable dough: a conductive dough allows for current flow, and a non-conductive dough that helps isolate different areas of a circuit. In the tense period just before Britain enters what will be WWII, Will, a young boy from London, is sent as an evacuee to the country where he is going to live with Mr Tom, an uncommunicative and what seem to be (on the surface) a grumpy old man. Michelle Magorian’s classic wartime story is a superbly written and deeply moving tale, which shows that even the most unlikely people can become exceptional parents. The author does not shy away from descriptions of abuse, nor does she spare details when describing the horrors of the Blitz, which effect more than one character in the novel. A sad, deprived child, he slowly begins to flourish under the unlikely care of grumpy old Tom Oakley.

I can't even remember how often I read it as a young teenager, but I still feel that shiver going down my spine. This story deals with war, abuse and hate, endurance, poverty, the twisting of religion to justify the abuse of others, the hopelessness of children who have never known love, as well as the joy of giving love. This story warmed my heart and made me well up when this lonely, unloved boy learns to love and trust and to become loved.
