About this deal

In this compelling and convincing debut novel, Morris brilliantly evokes a world slipping, day by day, under the surface of the opaque waters of war. The city is being destroyed all around her, going to university or her studio is no longer an option, and her own apartment building is damaged in the shelling. here earlier today, but it’s a debut novel, and it is still in my mind after the entire day has passed by.

Cut off from the outside world and at the mercy of snipers and enemy shelling, food shortages, lack of power and fresh water turn a once civilised thriving city into a virtual wasteland. Her interviews and feature articles have appeared in numerous magazines,, national newspapers, and university publications. It is not what I thought the “South” looked like, but it clearly has shaped the city’s deep rooted segregation. All of these are represented fairly in the story through characters coming from various ethnic identities. Later, Victor's drug stash is found in their house, and soon the three siblings are taken from their mother and placed into separate foster homes.

The sky is cerulean blue until it dims to black, with the shelling and devastation of innocent lives lost, historic buildings demolished, books and papers blown by the wind. While we see and experience everything though Zora’s perspective, we also get a sense of the community—her neighbours particularly who turn into a source of much needed comfort and support for each other during the ordeal—while each also deals with their own problems. When Catherine’s home is investigated, Child Protective Services (CPS) intervenes, Victor is sent to prison, and she loses her children to the foster care system. Citizens can’t imagine circumstances could get worse, that the rumors are true, that the occupying force would really threaten lives or cause destruction or take away freedoms or imprison responsible citizens. There is a very sad death towards the end that I could acknowledge as heartbreaking but I didn't feel the sorrow because of that disconnection. With consideration to the daily realities that foster children or youth may experience, Black Butterfly embodies real-life issues through faith-based reflections. Initially we see her painting its bridges and landscapes—and later the destruction and fires that take over the city. This didn’t make any difference to me this time but to those who expect a book to cater to its advertised genre, this could be a minor problem. As a gentleman knowing the requirements of society…, we ask you to use your influence with the Trustees that their decision on this subject may be changed…to avoid this threatening danger…”.
