About this deal

Bread and Jam For Frances personifies a young female badger as a fussy eater who loves bread and jam. What I take away from this book is that having rules to follow simply means someone cares enough about you to make sure you’re taking care of yourself. Bread and Jam for Frances is a Level Two I Can Read book, geared for kids who read on their own but still need a little help. Betsy Bird is currently the Collection Development Manager of the Evanston Public Library system and a former Materials Specialist for New York Public Library.

The husband and wife team wrote and illustrated many books together, many of which rank among my favorite picture books and one of which was the source of a long-standing family joke, but I’ll be reviewing that one on another day, so I won’t spoil the story here. I like the way that her parents chose to address her problem by helping her to understand how boring it is to eat one thing all the time rather than forcing her to eat something she doesn’t want.

Join the generations of families that have laughed along as Frances sings “Jam on biscuits, jam on bread, Jam is the thing I like most, Jam is sticky, jam is sweet, Jam is tasty, jam’s a treat–raspberry, strawberry, gooseberry, I’m very FOND…OF…JAM! Then he sprinkled more salt on the egg and went around again… He ate his bunch of grapes and his tangerine…He set the cup custard in the middle of the napkin on his desk… He shut his lunch box, put it back inside his desk, and sighed. Her family continue to eat delicious wonderful meals and help her to understand she has other options. Frances decides she wants to eat only bread and jam at every meal until--to her surprise--her parents grant her wish.

I persisted in reading Bread and Jam for Frances, by Russell Hoban, to her even after she lost interest and started standing up and running around on the bed. In addition to being a longtime fan of the Hobans, I was also a big fan of all the Frances books and this one is no exception. I still love the artwork just as much, there’s a lot of feeling and expression in the character depiction. Well, I've become a "the-only-thing-I-want-for-breakfast-is eggs" person, so I'll gladly eat any that Frances doesn't want (except fried with "lace" - yuck! It covers questions of community, relationships, the self, conceptions of the environment, and ethics. She has served on Newbery, written for Horn Book, and has done other lovely little things that she'd love to tell you about but that she's sure you'd find more interesting to hear of in person. She prefers to eat the same for dinner that night in lieu of breaded veal cutlets with string beans and baked potatoes. Dean Carlson for AllMusic praised the album for taking the "darkwave pretensions of Switchblade Symphony's previous material and pushed it through an even more stylized electronic filter. The only other contender that comes immediately to mind is Badger from The Wind in the Willows but how many American children can remember him off the tops of their heads?

Lillian Hoban was the author and illustrator of many favorite I Can Read books, including Joe and Betsy the Dinosaur, Silly Tilly's Thanksgiving, and a series about Arthur the Chimpanzee. The most recent book in Cohen's tales of a first-grade class finds the children preparing for Thanksgiving vacation. My favorite Frances book is A Baby Sister for Frances where she runs away to under the kitchen table. The classic funny I Can Read story about a stubborn little badger with very particular tastes in food. When her Mother gives her eggs for breakfast she chooses to eat her favourite food- bread and jam instead.

Now that my nephew is learning to read, the books are getting so good; I’m not sure this one will make it into his hands. The classic funny story about a stubborn little badger with very particular tastes in food--now in the always-appealing 8x8 format! That well-loved class of first-graders is delightful in another adventure, this one starring George.

original sound resembling The Flower Duet sung over a twisted union of classical music and gothic rock. Frances turns up her nose at the soft-boiled eggs the rest of the family is having for breakfast and just eats bread and jam. Albert makes the lunch come out even - he has a cream cheese-cucumber-and-tomato sandwich on rye bread, and a pickle to go with it. That's the end of Frances's jam-only days, as she discovers, in her own winsome way, that variety really is the spice of mealtimes.

In the second Frances book, A Baby Sister for Frances, his wife, Lillian, took over the illustrating, using Mr. Even though I don't actually like most of the foods that comprise Frances' particular diet (barring bread and jam, of course), the book always made me really hungry anyway. A poor condition book can still make a good reading copy but is generally not collectible unless the item is very scarce. And then, in the course of things, Kate starts looking up what the USDA recommendations are for children, we consider the wackadoodle utensils of the Badger household, what exactly a lobster salad sandwich is, etc. Jam on biscuits, jam on toast, / Jam is the thing that I like most / Jam is sticky, jam is sweet, / Jam is tasty, jam’s a treat - / Raspberry, strawberry, gooseberry, / I’m very / Fond…of…jam!
