We are no longer listing products containing barley malt extract or barley malt vinegar unless they are labelled gluten free. In the United States, the conventional wisdom has been – and continues to be – that malt vinegar is NOT SUITABLE for someone on a gluten-free diet. Other types of vinegar—for example, non-distilled vinegars made from the gluten grains wheat, barley, and rye, and malt vinegar made from barley—are not gluten-free.

If you are not looking closely at the label, would you think these products are the same, just in different sized containers? Foods that contain small amounts of barley malt vinegar can be eaten by people with coeliac disease if they contain 20 parts per million (ppm) of gluten or less. You could also attempt to make malt vinegar at home from a subpar batch of GF homebrewed beer, if you enjoy experimenting with fermentation.As it is, it is taking some USA food companies a while to get their products ready for a gluten-free market.
