If I Was Your Girl is not going to wow you with an unpredictable story line or ground breaking style but it will give you a trans character to relate to. Please not that I have read a proof of If I Was Your Girl, so this quote may not have made it to the finished copy. Finally, I agree with some of the criticism around the portrayal of Amanda’s transition, particularly the fact that she exists within a very special storm of privileged circumstances.Like, she’s in Lambertville High for less than a day before the boys come sniffing around like she’s a piece of fresh meat on display. She declines any advance knowing that it would only cause trouble and that her dad would strongly disapprove. They would then assign a substitute to my classes, or at the very least, check to see who is enrolled in my classes.

I’ve seen trans people in movies and TV shows, but judging by how unrealistic and shitty bi characters tend to be, I’m gonna assume I know nothing.

I thought this book was trying to make itself a book for trans readers to relate to and adore, and I felt that way up until the incredibly cruel outing. In the present day timeline weeks could go by in a matter of pages, so it was definitely glossing over the year maybe a bit quicker than I would’ve liked, but that’s only because I could’ve read 300 MORE pages about Amanda and her journey. But it is not the only part of the novel, and I wanted to critique the whole book, not just the thing it is most known for.
