Small batch distilled at our distillery on Mull, we combine hand selected botanicals with a splash of spirit from the Tobermory whisky stills to create three deliciously unique gins.Believed to have been laden with jewels, we have finished our smoky Ledaig signature expression in hand selected Rioja casks in honour of the Spanish treasure buried deep off our shoreline. Matured in ex-American Oak for 13 years before a 7 year finish in a Muscat Wine cask, this cask strength 20 year old single malt brings notes of honey sweetness, stewed plums and a spicy nutmeg finish. The peat turns more smokey on the palate, as if bonfire embers are fighting sea spray that’s dampening the fire out. Distilled using the same pot stills as the classic unpeated Tobermory expression, just with peated barley instead, the whisky boasts plumes of rich, earthy, almost medicinal smoke, with underlying fresh fruit and crushed spice notes. Inspired by the wild purple heather clad mountains on the Isle of Mull, this award-winning Hebridean gin has been distilled with heather, rowan berry and rosehip to create a sweet, herbaceous and gently spicy gin.

After Sinclair’s first application was rejected, he persevered, remained true to his original vision and, a year later, the distillery was established. The peated expression produced at Tobermory is heavily peated, with Ledaig becoming a brand of its own in 2007. This 12 year old Ledaig Distillery Exclusive release was finished in Amarone wine casks for one year, creating a sweet but smoky dram with sweet vanilla custard and honey notes balanced with sharp tannins and a distinct saline note intertwined with a peppery smoke. Tobermory distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery situated on the Hebridean island of Mull, Scotland in the village of Tobermory. It’s named after the original name of the area, which translates as ‘safe haven’ in Gaelic, and was launched in 2007. At Tobermory we produce two distinct single malts made for half the year each: a non-peated Tobermory and a heavily-peated Ledaig.

Ledaig is a single malt Scotch peated whisky produced on the Isle of Mull at the Tobermory distillery. Made with heavily peated barley before being matured in ex-bourbon casks, and finished in hand-selected Spanish Rioja casks, this single malt contains powerful flavours of smoke, spice, grape and sweet berries, with a lingering saltiness. In 1797 John Sinclair, an innovative kelp merchant, applied for a lease of land known as Ledaig – pronounced ‘letch-ick’ – which means ‘safe haven’. Fully matured in a Sherry Butt, this peated single cask brings notes of dark chocolate orange, toasted honeycomb and rich oak spice.The first release in our new Sinclair Series, this non aged statement Ledaig Rioja Finish is ruby red in colour and perfectly balances peat smoke with sweet, fruity Rioja. Sweet briny smokiness with distinct island character and playful notes that hint at mild antiseptic, creosote, wax polish, mint chocolate and floral seaside aromas. The depth of character and complexity is testament to a well crafted whisky, evident of only the finest ingredients and barrels and also no added colouring and non chilled filtered. Tantalisingly sweet, medicinal flavours infused with enticing sparks of spicy pepper and dried fruit with rich peaty smoke and a velvety vanilla and malty creaminess.

Palate: Thick peat engulfs your tongue, overriding your sensory system and seemingly staining your mouth. This whisky unfolds with an intricate blend of peat smoke, maritime notes, and a subtle sweetness, reminiscent of salted caramel. Notes of barley and malt extract, with walnut and pine oil and a hint of iodine, dried fruit and nuts. Distilled in 2005 and matured in a single sherry butt for 14 years before being bottled in February 2020. Notes of Turkish delight and rose petals balanced with candied fruits and grapes followed by rich leather and a beautiful peppery spice.I think a few wee sample bottles coming in the post are easier to justify to my better half than a larger box and the judging eyes burning in the back of my skull when the postman arrives. The 18 had a quieter smoke/peat presence with a hint of coast when compared to the 10 which is vibrant, loud and full of flavour.
