About this deal

This book is hugely relevant for anyone interested in the basic psychology of design and how it influences and impacts peoples’ perceptions, motivations, decision-making, behaviours and actions. Peachpit has always been committed to developing new ways to share information and make lifelong learning as accessible and engaging as possible. Each of the 100 "pills" of knowledge is summarized in two to three pages with many illustrations to help the reader absorb the concept easily. As designers, it’s important that we take into account how we weigh and consider different visual behaviors in the layout of our webpages and applications. ana kadar okuduğum en başarılı ve yararlı tasarım kitaplarından biri olan "100 Things Every Designer Needs to Know about People", her tasarımcının kütüphanesinde bulunması gereken rehberlerden biri.

When not teaching, speaking, writing, or blogging, Susan reads books, watches movies, and sings in a jazz band. Finally I would say that it's easy to read and I recommend this book to those who wants to know about the basics of design. It seems to be a universal trait that we think about, remember, imagine, and recognize objects from this canonical perspective. Sometimes, the takeaways will introduce a concept not covered elsewhere in the section, and only tangentially-related, but which is nevertheless sound advice. On a particular chapter, the author promotes a Psychology theory that she herself admits is polemic and not taught anymore on Psychology classes.

The idea at play is that people recognize patterns in objects, and the recognition of those patterns is how we identify objects. Maybe you’re fixing your bike or finishing a marathon, whatever the case may be, you enter a flow state when you’re journeying toward a certain goal, uninterrupted by thoughts of other goals. When you see an individual smile, your brain responds with mirror neurons causing you to smile, too. Even though it was written in a simple manner and it was easy to understand, I did not learn anything new. That said, 100 Things book contained lots of great information told in a relatively interesting, entertaining style.I would say the way everyday things are made, especially on the internet, are based on TONS of studies to catch people’s attention. One of the professional development training items on the books for FY17-18 at work was a book I’ve had on my to-read list for several years: 100 Things Every Designer Needs to Know about People by Susan Weinschenk, PhD. In an eye-tracking study of all the subjects who watched that well-known gorilla video (even the ones who didn't notice the gorilla) were registered by the eyetracking software as having looked directly at the gorilla. Offering insights into human psychology on nearly every page, 100 Things is a book about human beings and the shared reasons why we do the things we do. The chapters on dopamine were definitely insightful for me and the time I read those coincided with a project which explored some of these things.

So to create a flow state for people while they use your product, you have to minimize distractions. You need to break down information and have a thorough understanding of memory to make a good product. Weinschenk is a behavioral psychologist who, for the last 30 years, has applied her expertise to the fields of design and user experience. This principle outlines how behaviour can either be increased or decreased based on how often and in what way a reward (reinforcement) is given. Our peripheral vision is what picks up everything around whatever we’re focusing on – all the objects, movements and colors that we’re not looking at directly but can still see. Therefore, it’s essential to incorporate surprising elements like sound cues when your user is using your product to keep them coming back. Susan describes how humans actually use peripheral vision rather frequently in our day to day activities.
