About this deal

From pioneer fiction to a series set in Victorian England to a contemporary novel, Lori's books (over 5 million in print) continue to delight readers and top the Christian bestselling fiction list.

At age 17, with the help of his attorney and social worker, Ambroz was able to emancipate himself a year early from the foster care system, after which he attended Vassar college and finally came out as a gay man. It does not help, Desmond adds, that so few working people are represented by unions or that Black Americans, even those who have followed the “three rules” (graduate from high school, get a full-time job, wait until marriage to have children), are far likelier to be poor than their White compatriots. This is the line my mother has always walked: she protects us and hurts us; she provides and deprives; we survive beside her, despite her, and because of her. You will fall in love with David Ambroz, his beautifully-told, gut-wrenching story, and his great big heart. in " The BookBrowse Review" - BookBrowse's membership magazine, and in our weekly " Publishing This Week" newsletter. This volume of delightfully put together lifestyle, home and interiors tips – with divine photography by the wonderfully talented James Geer – has given a truly novel and down-to-earth approach to how a home should look.

It’s not heavy on text, instead throwing itself, whole-heartedly into tips and tricks to make the styling of your sanctuary simple and effective, and without having to throw wads of cash at it. He later graduates from UCLA Law with a vision of using his degree to change the laws that affect children in poverty. He does not open up his trauma to the reader just so they can be a bystander to a car crash, instead, he uses it to advocate for systematic change to the foster care system.

Through circumstances she could have done without, but which turn out to be a blessing in disguise, Christine finds employment and a place to live. Yet Ambroz shows a determination in his life, told through an informal and engaging writing style, that is not just admirable but the guiding force through which he ultimately prevails. He’s just a child and has no idea what happened and how to care for himself so the original bandages stay on for days. I realized this is what childhood could’ve been…eyes of wonder looking up at a candy-colored world, gentle nudges of guidance, snacks and naptime, laughter and games…this is what childhood is mean to offer – pure joy.

You read so many books, and see so many movies/tv shoes now about how characters "fall in love" when really its just their over active hormones working and all they really want to do is sleep together. Seemed like every other paragraph where Christine appears so does the word "tears" in describing her state of mind. She wanted the best for them and instilled the importance of a good education but lacked the ability to provided consistent care and love. The whole time I was reading I kept visualizing the girl on the cover, so it was annoying to me that the described girl was the complete opposite in appearance. In addition to reading, I also enjoy yoga and walking - I am a big audio fan and love listening to audio books while out walking!

What I want us to believe is, we as individuals have the power and responsibility to help vulnerable people. It made me think a lot about problems as foster care, poverty, trauma, violence, mental illness but in the same time gave me hope that despite all of that we also have kindness, love, courage, hope, determination to change our path, ambition. It shows a blue-eyed fair-skinned and presumably fair-haired (judging from her eyebrow color) woman when the actual lead character of the book is supposed to be olive skinned with dark hair and green eyes. It offers a cogent set of policy prescriptions for change, grounded in personal experience, but supported by empirical evidence and written by someone who you can only believe will see to it that they are enacted.Ambroz works incredibly hard at school because he knows that an education is his golden ticket out of poverty and homelessness. Despite the bruises, the malnourishment, the missed school, the constant lice, the bad teeth… hardly anyone ever follows up and no one rescues them. Sometimes we are given none, and then when massive issues arise we are left wondering how we could have helped more. If reading about Christ and characters praying is objectionable to you, then you will probably not enjoy this book. Ambroz’s memoir describes his life from age 4 through his twenties, and opens on a freezing winter day.
