There are many tearjerkers: some for very sad stories, but many for heartbreakingly joyous ones, told amongst desperate situations. The Power to Comprehend with All the Saints: The Formation and Practice of a Pastor-Theologian, edited by Wallace M. The third volume of the classic adventures and misadventures of the young vet, James Herriot, in the Yorkshire Dales from 1937 onwards. But then I realized I was comparing it to All Creatures Great And Small, which I could start all over again every time I get to the final page.

Frankly, I wanted more of the same: relatively low-tension drama about life as a country vet in 1930s northern England as dished out in the first two books of this series.

When the man leaves the area again we are left with a few hints of the mystery of his life, but we know nothing for sure. James remembers Judy, Eric Abbot’s sheepdog, who used to watch James fix up the farm’s animals, almost like his own personal nurse. Herriot remembers, in this chapter, a time when tuberculosis was common in their area back in Darrowby, and the veterinarians had to check many herds of cattle. And, of course, there's a powerful nostalgia element in these stories about our green and pleasant land in the day before the ravages of ribbon development. Just enough to explain what he is doing at the time and how the activity triggers memories of the work in his animal practice. The real-time verve of James’ innocence and growing into his practice, however, has been interrupted by the “memories” narrative, caused by the shadow of war and the hardship of separation and rejection.
