About this deal

If you’re someone who roots for people to be together no matter the obstacles, personality or otherwise, this will probably be just fine for you.

Now that high school is over, Ari is dying to move to the big city with his ultra-hip band - if he can just persuade his dad to let him quit his job at their struggling family bakery. If you’re looking for a quick read, a sweet, summery romance, and an absolutely adorable book about baking, Bloom is absolutely the best choice! I went into this fully expecting to fall head over heels for Bloom after having read dozens of glowing reviews, but unfortunately this was nowhere near the cute, well-written romance I was anticipating. Ari, no longer so moody, and less reluctant now to work at the bakery, takes a shine to his newfound friend, who is a wizard with a mound of dough.

I think it’s pretty clear from the very beginning that Ari is attracted to Hector (same, my man, big same), and I was a big fan of that. Cieszę się, że ukazane są tu nie tylko słodko-niezobowiązujące momenty, ale także ważne rozmowy, stawianie granic i trudne relacje. The black-and-white illustrations allow for Iago’s conniving manipulations to manifest visually as well as animating characters’ bigotry in impactful, distressing ways. There are a lot of very real problems, as well, along the way, like dealing with some pretty manipulative people— exes and *ahem* bad friends -___- (just one, mayybeeee sort of two?

High school may have ended, but Ari is stuck with sourdough starter at his family’s bakery instead of summer gigs in the city with his band. However, I never had strong feelings about him one way or another, I didn’t think there was anything about him that really stuck out of enough to make him a memorable character for me.When he meets Hector, an easy going baker and Ari’s replacement at the bakery, his plans start to go sideways. They bake bread a few times together and get along, but somewhere their friendship makes a really quick jump to romance.

Minor cautions to keep in mind before reading would be that there is sexually suggestive content within the book, that may be cautionary depending on the age of the reader, as well as a fire, both with illustrated content. Savanna has also contributed to comic series such as Adventure Time, Lumberjanes, Jem and the Holograms, and The Backstagers. I found this to be a quick read, one that compels the reader to finish it in one sitting, and it is an easy enough read to do so.But in the midst of interviewing candidates for his replacement, Ari meets Hector, an easy-going guy who loves baking as much as Ari wants to escape it. Ari is young, and he battles with having his entire future stretched out before him and all the big decisions that come with graduating from high school. these random leaps made the story feel incredibly disjointed and as if entire parts of the story were missing. Now that high school is over, Ari is dying to move to the big city with his ultra-hip band, if he can just convince his dad to let him quit their struggling family bakery. While a tale that evades all the tired tropes of gay life is completely refreshing, there will undoubtedly be those who question whether Bloom is also evading the realities of what young gay men still struggle with, even in 2019.

With ‘ Bloom II‘ schedules for release in 2023 we might see some more complexity, and the secondary characters fleshed out more… I’m looking forward to this sequel. Imagine reading and watching Nicholas Sparks’ The Notebook with a queer couple, not changing anything about the story. The lack of ordinary conflict is simultaneously this breathtaking book’s crowning glory and its most enigmatic aspect. Savanna Ganucheau: We definitely wanted to tell a story about characters who are already comfortable in their identity.

Their dream is to move to nearby Baltimore, where the music scene is hopping and they might have a chance at the big time. Recent publications include work in F(r)iction , Lunch Ticket , Meow Meow Pow Pow , From Whispers to Roars , Fterota Logia , Critical Read , for which he won the 2019 "Origins" essay contest, and LARB .
