About this deal

With Eric Martin, Hiventy’s workflow supervisor, we very quickly saw the limits of colour reproduction in those files,” explains Bigueur. The Not So Good/Bad - The new 4K makeover gives the film a very different appearance because it is graded differently. The 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray discs introduce a brand new 4K makeover of The Brotherhood of the Wolf which was prepared at Hiventy and endorsed by Christophe Gans. Currently, the only Blu-ray release with the Director's Cut of the film is the one French distributors Studio Canal produced in 2008).

As panic spreads, the king sends the renowned naturalist and taxidermist, Grégoire de Fronsac (Samuel Le Bihan), to investigate and eliminate the beast. Brotherhood of the Wolf meshes traditional horror with a werewolf theme and superb martial arts action from Mark Dacascos who almost steals the film as the cool but deadly Mani. For example, there are a lot of areas that used to have either prominent cold blues or shades of different cold blues, some mixed with prominent grays or shades of gray, that are altered with different ranges of cyan/light cyan. If you had a blast with the previous John Wick outings, spending the best part of three hours watching him kick, stab, shoot and nun-chuck his way through another cast of increasingly grandstanding players will be a similarly fabulous ride. Brotherhood of the Wolf is also an excellent period film with terrific costumes, lavish decors, and spectacular locations (the finale is indeed breathtaking) that create the kind of environment we truly do not get to experience in our theaters anymore. Set in 1765, during the reign of Louis XV, an epic adventure based in part on a well-known French legend. Originally filmed in 35mm and scanned in a 2K 8-bit in the early 2000s, it quickly became apparent that the digital scans from 2000 wouldn’t be sufficient for remastering in 4K Dolby Vision .

but it's been reported that only the colours were tweaked and, purely through the level of finesse they are now able to do, that this could better blend in antiquated effects which still sometimes stand out, but are far better integrated than ever before. Introducing our heroes – the soldier/naturalist De Fronsac and his brother-in-arms, Mani, again we are thrown an absolute curve-ball. After a foreboding introductory sequence, set in the midst of the French Revolution, we flashback as the narrating character reflects on his fateful experiences from the preceding decades. Initially the film starts bright and cheery with bold sunlight and rich primaries - and it looks incredible now, by the way. You can probably tell from my comment above about Shout’s previous Blu-ray release that I was no fan of the transfer used there. There are a couple of instances where it's not quite perfect - like the first encounter between De Fronsac, investigating a dead body in the water, and the hunting group of soldiers out to catch the beast has the soldiers come down the hill with the colour timing slightly off; their uniforms blending into the hilltop colours in a way that seems alien - but this only really goes to further highlight what a masterful job has been done to the rest of the 150+ minutes of epic visual artistry. The final project deliverables included a P3 DCI master with Dolby Atmos audio mix for theatrical releases and ProRes XQ versions in HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision.

Gans is a wonderful chat, which should come as no surprise since he was such an outspoken film critic before becoming a filmmaker. During the reign of Louis XV an isolated district of south-central France is haunted by the "Beast of Gévaudan" which has savagely killed over 100 people, mostly women and children. There are close to 10 hours worth of extras, including both commentaries, which is exhausting to get through but, surprisingly, not so repetitive to feel like overkill. Still though, some of the CGI beast shots look striking and blend well with the practical prop effects nicely. The box set has an extensive selection of archival bonus features that were originally made available on various DVD releases of Brotherhood of the Wolf. Please note that some of the screencaptures that appear with this article are taken from the 4K Blu-ray and downscaled to 1080p.
