About this deal

A young boy named Michael runs away from a boarding school and meets an old lady living in a big cottage. Michael is good at using his imagination thats why I like his books but out of all the books he's written The Butterfly lion is the best.

He, a soldier in the 'Great war' and the relationship they formed and maintained with the small lion cub he had befriended in Africa and the twists and turns of their story ending with the outline of the lion cut out on the chalk hill above the house on which hundreds of butterflies land to take their nourishment. Yes, it is for children and it is very basic in its writing style and all those things but the depth of story for such a short piece was fantastic and although it was a little far-fetched (rightly so; it is a children's book after all) I caught myself smiling throughout the hour it took me to complete. I particularly liked the descriptions of the African settings, perhaps because my parents both grew up in Africa. Warning: this review may have spoilers** It wasn't my type the start was good but after it got boring. Together they discover that Monsieur Merlot's circus has closed down, but that the Frenchman lives nearby with the lion.I didn't much like Bertie's father, who was mean and awful and didn't seem to like the lion and judging from the story he didn't really seem to like Bertie much either.

The language and accents, transport you into the story, also, helping the listener appreciate unfamiliar accents and dialects. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Having a skilled narrator telling the story, especially if it's the author themselves,as michael Morpurgo does. I would recommend it as a class 'story time' book for years 2 and 3, and as a reading for pleasure book for years 4-6. Many years later, Bertie becomes a soldier and when he goes to France, he sees the white lion again. The character of the boy mirrors that of the husband Bertie as they both run way and have to deal with loneliness.
