About this deal

Every new Agatha Raisin escapade is a total joy' ASHLEY JENSEN'No wonder she's been crowned Queen of Cosy Crime' MAIL ON SUNDAY'A Beaton novel is like The Archers on speed' DAILY MAIL'The detective novels of M C Beaton have reached cult status' THE TIMESNothing could be more relaxing or sedate than a quiet game of bowls on a pristine bowling green bathed in the sunshine of an English summer's afternoon in the Cotswolds - unless there's a dead body lying on the grass. For close to 30 years, Agatha has been a permanent 53 years old and Toni Gilmour an almost permanent 23 years old (Toni was 17 years old at her very first appearance).

The story, an unusual poisoning plot set at the local bowling club, had plenty of twists and turns, and kept you guessing right until the end. BEATON (1936-2019) was the author of the New York Times and USA Today bestselling Agatha Raisin novels -- the basis for the hit show on Acorn TV and public television -- as well as the Hamish Macbeth series and the Edwardian Murder Mysteries featuring Lady Rose Summer.Slightly unrealistic that agatha has three desirable men after her, I suspect a man wrote this because agatha just doesnt seem real. I am sorry to see this installment, compromising what up until this one had been a fun set of books. The whole book is a huge delight and R W Green has done a wonderful job in continuing and expanding on the work of our beloved M C Beaton. Not only does Agatha have a murder or two to solve, but also exotic animal smugglers to catch, which almost proves to be her undoing. He has written quite a good mystery in his second attempt and the book is worth reading for that alone.

When I’ve been reading a lot of “issue” books and am anxious over the state of the world, it’s nice to slip into an Agatha Raisin book and be distracted for awhile. Then there is another murder, Agatha's employee Simon is beaten up, and Agatha is almost killed herself investigating--the charming Cotswold village is not as safe as it looks. Also, the reader has an elderly voice that really doesn't fit Agatha's age and therefore her thoughts and actions. The original author of this series, MC Beaton, wanted the current author to continue the Agatha Raisin series when she passed. Local gossip points to the Swinburns themselves as the killers, spurred by a feud at the club where they, as well as the Admiral, were members.

Green, her friend and fellow author, has picked up the mantle and attempted to carry on with the series with all the usual characters. Nothing could be more relaxing or sedate than a quiet game of bowls on a pristine bowling green bathed in the sunshine of an English summer's afternoon in the Cotswolds - unless there's a dead body lying on the grass. The majority of characters might best be described as bucolic, with the exception of Agatha and her sidekick Toni. Once again finding herself at odds with the incompetent DCI Wilkes, Agatha is determined to prove that this latest death was in fact murder and bring the perpetrator to justice. I had found that many of the last books had become rather nasty, with characters hurling insults and abuse at each other.

Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. It provided more character development, but I wished it had more of an increase of suspense instead. The dead body she finds with two observers is ruled an accidental poisoning by Wilkes, but our girl has her doubts. Agatha encounters one suspicious character after another, becoming further enmeshed in the Admiral's own dark and shady past. Agatha meddles in Detective Sergeant Bill Wong's family life with the result that he likely will be able to move on with his current relationship.Agatha has a way of getting herself mixed up in all sorts of mayhem, and she's at it again in this book. Agatha is a little kinder and more mature, more like the television series version of the character, and her ex-husband and friend James is warmer and less pompous, but those are changes I enjoyed.
