It’s certainly entertaining on the surface; if you’re ever just looking for a quick thrill this does the job- unfortunately it just didn’t do any more than that for me. Eventually the case comes to the attention of Detective Jo Harper who starts to see some truth in what Lauren is saying, but this won’t be an easy case to crack, venturing off as it does into the realms of the supernatural!

There are some unsettling interactions between new mother Lauren and a creepy woman who threatens to swap Lauren’s twin babies with her own. Cue husband Patrick, now it’s been a while since I have detested a character to such an extent that I wanted to throw the book across the room! While there, a strange woman accosts her and says she is going to trade Lauren's children for her own fish-like offspring. When DS Joanna Harper picks up the list of overnight incidents that have been reported, a report of an attempted abduction catches her eye. Melanie Golding throws in moments of pure clarity and calculated decision-making in respect of Lauren which I felt cast further doubt on the true nature of what was happening.The Illustrated Mum won the Guardian Children’s Fiction Award, the 1999 Children’s Book of the Year at the British Book Awards and was also shortlisted for the 1999 Whitbread Children’s Book Award. The doctors seem eager to medicate Lauren into a stupor and the police just don’t want the expense of spending more time on the case than needed. It would have been great to see a storyline where Destiny and her mother find happiness with themselves, after seeing Danny's reality at the premiere. I thought it would be a bit hard understanding standing this book because it kept swapping characters each chapter and I might get a bit confused!

Destiny and sunset are both excited by this prospect as sunset(the rich one) has a famous dad singer who welcomes destiny. I think generally the child is exchanged with another creature, generally a sickly fairy child, which can look like the original child because it can change its shape.A tasty, if not always tasteful, tale of supernatural mayhem that fans of King and Crichton alike will enjoy. Quite a few of the chapters open with a selection of these tales to really help this theme cement in your mind and show just how creepy they are. Both women have extremely different roles in this book, but Golding crafts them each in a way that gives them a distinct personality and a steady, realistic motivation for acting in the ways that they do. Nick Sharratt has created illustrations for over two hundred and fifty books during his illustrious career. When the two girls meet in unlikely circumstances, they are surprised to find in each other something they've been missing all their lives.
