About this deal

This entry-level M-series is a notch up from the ATH-S220BT, but with a small price difference, the M20xBT looks more “professional” with a sturdier build. Compared to the ATH-M50xBT2, the M20xBT feels more lightweight, the headband clamping force is lighter, and the earcups are slightly larger. In terms of comfort, I prefer wearing the M20xBT over the M50xBT2, but the M20xBT cannot be folded, so it takes more space when carrying it around. And obviously the M50xBT2 feels more robust and solid thanks to its flexible earcups that can pivot and swivel in any direction. The M50xBT2 also offers better passive noise isolation. Audio-Technica ATH-M20xBT vs. ATH-M50xBT2 M20xBT Features Although we cannot vouch for the sound yet, we're intrigued to see if Audio-Technica can score a home run here –if so, there's very little standing in their way… Listening in wired or wireless mode didn’t affect the quality much. There was only a slight increase in volume when connecting the aux cable to my laptop. But if I put all comparison aside and listen to the M20xBT on its own, I am quite pleased with the frequency balance. The treble is clear and not “Hi-Res” bright, the bass has presence but not overpowering, while midrange has sufficient weight while not making it sound too bloated or ringing. Piano does not sound muddy, strings deliver good sizzle, saxophone do not sound sibilant, percussions do not sound too distant. The primary instrument is mixed just a tad forward, so that accompaniment remains close. With everything put together, the music is cohesive, all instruments are heard without any major in-fighting. The ATH-M20xBT seek to recreate the natural sound of the wired ATH-M20x and do so successfully. On the standard tuning, the soundstage is suitably broad, with clearly articulated vocals and effective instrument separation helping produce an impressively detailed mid-range. While these may not include noise cancelling, I did find that the secure fit meant the sound isolation was pretty good. I didn’t find myself getting too annoyed at the outside noise penetrating through the headphones but I was still able to hear what was going on around me.There is one caveat to this performance. The sound is significantly clarified if you use the supplied 1.2-metre cable instead of the wireless connection. (Bluetooth offers only SBC and AAC, with no higher-quality codecs available to Android users.) The padded ear cups surround your ears and can be smoothly extended from the padded headband to help you find the right fit. There aren't ready-made settings but I still found these very comfortable, they also only weigh 216g so it’s easy to forget they’re there. I mostly used these for journeying because of that because they’re not waterproof and they do move around a little so I wouldn’t recommend them for working out.

Moving to the audio quality, the ATH-M20xBT sounds more neutral compared to the ATH-M50xBT2 that is known to have bright tuning. The M20xBT has relatively more midrange presence which adds musical support to the upper bass and lower treble, resulting in a more full, meaty sound. The stereo imaging is wide and close, feels like I’m positioned in front of the performers. Its lower bass is less intense, the upper treble is less intensely sparkling than the M50. On the M50, the music sounds more exciting, more airy and sizzling, acoustic genres like Classical and Jazz plays brilliantly on the M50. Compared to the ATH-S220BT, the M20xBT sounds clearer, the upper midrange is less emphasised. Audio-Technica didn’t need to include any listening modes, but they added a Low Latency mode for enhanced streaming and gaming. There wasn’t any difference when watching Netflix shows or YouTube clips. I’m not an avid gamer, but from the short amount of time I put into Call of Duty Mobile and Mario Run, audio synchronization was improved when enabling the feature. Crystal clear with rich bass, natural mids and a crisp treble, their tuning feels very unoffensive and versatile. Some people might be looking for a more powerful punch but for those who want a pair of headphones to listen to all sorts of music, podcasts and videos I thought the balance was just right.Disconnect and then reconnect the USB charging cable to reset the product. Resetting does not change any of your settings (pairing information, volume setting, etc.)
