It is important to use the fertilizer when the plant demands it. Each soil has also a saturation level of nutrients it can absorb: when there is too much fertilizer in the ground the plants will not use it and the precious fertilizer will run off or leach. Soil bacteria use some of the fertilizers, in particular fish meal, for their own growth and well being which encourages early season microbial life.It’s easy for plants to absorb and take up, and is slow-release to benefit plants for months at a time. Method one: Each year, use a potassium-rich general fertiliser (rose fertiliser for example) in late winter as directed by the manufacturer. Blood and bone is an impressive slow-release fertiliser, with long-lasting effects that can take some time to show their impact. For that reason, it’s important not to over-feed pots, and use it sparingly, with a small sprinkle (about 1 tablespoon) per pot.

One frequently used replacement for blood, fish and bone fertiliser is Growmore. This is a chemical fertiliser first invented during World War Two that provides equal amounts of all three main nutrients. However, blood, fish and bone is more preferable to Growmore due to its slower release of nutrients, allowing plants to take them up more efficiently.
