About this deal

Swing bowling can be categorized into two types, i.e. Conventional swing and Reverse swing. Conventional swing bowling involves the use of a newer ball whereas the older and more worn ball is useful for Reverse swing. Throughout the play, the shiny side will also become worn, due to which swing bowling is considered effective when the ball is rather new. It is the change in the aerodynamic properties of these two sides that result in the swinging of the ball. Nevertheless, with the worn-out ball, spin bowling is preferred as it provides much more grip which in turn helps in producing more spin. However, other forms of swing bowling involve the use of worn balls, such as reverse swing. Typically, a swing bowler aligns the seam and the sides of the ball to reinforce the swing effect. This can be done in two ways: This drill will give you a good feel for wrist control. Practicing the motion will help you to determine how tightly or loosely you need to position the ball to control the seam. The typical way to create swing is to use the seam and the asymmetry of the ball. Bowlers will angle the seam away from the intended direction of travel so the shiny side of the ball faces the batsman. The ball will swing towards the direction that the seam is pointed – if the seam is angled toward the slip fielders it will swing away the batsman (outswinger) and if the seam is angled towards the leg side it will swing into the batsman (inswinger).

There are primarily two forms of swing, which are inswing and outswing. The former involves the ball starting wide from the batsman and moving into the batsman’s body, angling towards the stumps. Whereas the latter involves the ball starting in line with the stumps but gradually moving away, so that by the time it reaches the batsman, it widens and has a tendency to move away from the body of the batsman. To work on keeping the seam straight when you bowl, you can work on this simple drill. You will need a teammate for this one. Pakistan great Imran Khan was the first person I met who demonstrated to me - in the nets, one might add - how to tamper with the ball.

Business and innovation Find out how recent scientific breakthroughs are driving business innovation and commercial growth There are various thoughts from coaches and professionals on how to achieve late swing more consistently. Here are a couple to cast your eye over: Having a High ArmNobel prize-winning psychologist Daniel Kahneman and his colleague Amos Tversky showed that the way people think about probability and come to judgements based on evidence is subject to biases that make us rather poor intuitive scientists. Examples such as Massie’s test match are vivid and memorable. This unique art can be explained with physics and aerodynamics. Ultimately the swing is caused by the asymmetrical airflow around the ball, which creates different pressure on one side of the ball. This produces a sideways force that makes the ball swing.
