About this deal

I must say that as a fan of the Rodgers and Hammerstein movie musicals, I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones in the screen versions of OKLAHOMA and CAROUSEL. MacRae had a fine baritone voice and Jones a clear, sweet soprano. Stream It Or Skip It: 'A Nearly Normal Family' On Netflix, Where A Family's Secrets Come Out When The Daughter Is Accused Of Murder This avoids all that, by reimagining one of the old horses in a new mold. Apparently, it was quite an effort because the "Foundation" that has a stranglehold over how the material is used had to negotiate every nit. This idea that some survivors of an artist should benefit from something they had no hand in is vile enough; that they can smother its very artistic soul by legal means is worse. The expansive, dream-like sets are by Anthony Ward, who also designed the costumes. David Hersey is lighting designer, with John Owen Edwards as musical director. The original orchestrations are by Robert Russell Bennett, with additional orchestrations by William David Brohn and new dance music arranged by David Krane. Unfortunately it proves a near-impossible task. While lighting, sound and vision are technically first-rate, considering the time limits imposed upon the crews (18 days of shooting time!), overall the film never delivers the excitement and raw energy of the stage production, and to be honest, it should never have tried to. It feels artificial and looks second-best. The audience reaction shots are intrusive and irritating instead of convincing, and who allowed them to turn up in t-shirts and jeans? It's obvious they' re only there for the filming, and the camera should have left them in the dark and concentrated on the action onstage.

Jenna Bush Hager Reveals To Hoda Kotb That Her Daughter Asked Her Husband Why He Was "Lying" When He Said She "Never Looked Better" The creative team includes set and costume designer Anthony Ward, lighting designer David Hersey, music director John Owen Edwards and orchestrator Robert Russell Bennett, with additional orchestrations by William David Brohn and new dance music arranged by David Krane. Directed by Sir Trevor Nunn and choreographed by Susan Stroman, the acclaimed Royal National Theatre production from 1998 reveals the work’s emotional complexity with a fresh approach. The production was filmed at Shepperton Studios in London just before its move from the RNT to the West End. The special encore telecast is presented for the first time in high definition. Based on Lynn Riggs' Green Grow the Lilacs, Oklahoma!features music by Richard Rodgers andlyrics and a libretto by Oscar Hammerstein II. The classic score includes “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’,” “The Surrey with the Fringe on Top,” “People Will Say We’re in Love,” and the title tune.

Available until the end of the weekend via this link (it's a bit hit-and-miss via mobile, we've found), the piece also stars Peter Polycarpou and Maureen Lipman, with direction by Trevor Nunn and choreography by Susan Stroman. In a statement to People magazine, the couple said: “We have been blessed to share almost three decades together as husband and wife in a wonderful, loving marriage. Our journey now is shifting and we have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth. The production is well photographed as well, it's never too stage-bound but at the same time it's not too cinematic. For a filmed performance of an opera or musical that is the right approach. Its style and how Trevor Nunn directed did remind me somewhat of Nunn's production of Porgy and Bess, considering how great that is this is very high praise.

Oklahoma! was one of the first of many revivals of classic American musicals that Nunn produced as the then-artistic director of the National Theatre. The mounting was praised as a fresh rethinking of a classic; the interpretation's major shift with the past involved Stroman's choreography. Stroman was hired with the understanding that she would redesign the famed Act One ballet sequence from the ground up, eschewing Agnes DeMille's famous work. In Stroman and Nunn's conception, the actors danced in the show's dream ballets, a break with the tradition of when a "Dream Laurey" and "Dream Curly" would be cast.

I saw "Oklahoma" put on by a church in my town when I was about six, but I don't remember much about it.Anyway, what we have here is stage presentation reimagined for modern tastes. That means solving the integration of the songworld and the stageworld. The extras explain how this was nurtured, essentially by honing the show by forcing the actors to speak the lines. There's some clever thinking about the dances along the same lines.

The action was shot at the Shepperton Studios and directors Trevor Nunn and Chris Hunt have tried their hardest to give the tv film the feel of the live performance that so enchanted London audiences during the show's first run at RNT, while also using close-ups to provide extra emotional insights on characters.
