About this deal

He learns things that people like him would learn about cats and how people are with them. I don’t have much to say about it because it’s really cute and it’s really funny. Within the manga, there’s also some questions some fans would ask him and he’d earnestly answers them! I feel that without prior knowledge of his works, this will come off as just a bizarre little book and many won’t get the joke. That said, people who are into his sort of horror might not like that when all is said and done, he just wrote a cute little book about his cats. Osamu Dazai’s name is often mentioned in the same breath as those of other 20th Century Japanese writers like Yasunari Kawabata, Kenzaburo Oe, and Junichiro Tanizaki. Ito’s art is on top form here, designing a planet that looks diseased, alive, and monstrous. This Junji Ito manga is vaguely reminiscent of the outstanding cosmic horror comic masterpiece by Grant Morrison and Chris Burnham: Nameless. Through Junji Ito’s manga, he forces us to confront the demons of his imagination, and it seems like he enjoys it.

Despite its simple concept, it has created a way to use a simple shape found everywhere to inspire terror.

I have been successfully creeped out by horror manga-ka Ito's Uzumaki (a town driven to madness by spirals) and Museum of Terror (boys driven to madness and murder by a girl/femme fatale), so I just added this to my tbr list, and was surprised to find it is basically diary comics, the funny story of how dog person Ito got pushed into living with two cats by his wife.

This is another story found in Shiver. I should mention that one of the cool things about Shiver (as is common with many manga tankobon) is the inclusion of little notes and anecdotes from the author. They’re often about what inspired the story to begin with. Compared to Ito’s later works, Tomie is more controversial when read in a modern light. However, it does present how much he has honed his craft in the years following Tomie. No Longer Human is a novel inspired by Dazai’s own life, experiences, and behaviours. It shows us a man who feels as though he exists outside of the human experience. The name Uzumaki literally translates to ‘spiral’ and that is exactly what the story is about. Junji Ito manga is often defined by one single idea. When Ito’s manga adaptation of No Longer Human was published, it actually received a grander fanfare from fans than did his adaptation of Frankenstein.

Interest Stacks

Ito followed up on Shiverwith Smashedand, unfortunately, none of the stories in Smashedcan be found here because they simply don’t measure up to the quality of imagination on display in Shiver.

Inside and outside of his home country, Junji Ito’s manga is celebrated as the best of Japanese horror writing. The writing of this series is weaker than others, and ultimately, the plot doesn’t seem to make much sense. Due to this, Sensor was born. When a young woman was walking alone at the foot of Mount Sengoku, she was approached by a man who had been waiting for her. Junji Ito's Cat Diary". Kodansha USA. Archived from the original on 29 July 2019 . Retrieved 2 August 2019. Adapting Frankenstein faithfully and originally is no small ask, but Ito answered the call with grace and poise, as well as a manic adoration for the source material.
