About this deal

Congratulations on the new album. How was the process of making this album different to your last record, Invitation? Watson worked with Clive Langer, the producer who has overseen all 11 Madness albums. “All the effort has gone into writing this album and the rehearsing of 25 potential songs,” explains Suggs. Elsewhere, Canadian rapper Drake’s chart-topping album, For All the Dogs, has jumped up 21 places to number three following the release of its deluxe Scary Hours edition last week. a b "The Madness Timeline: 1977". It was, Suggs says, initially just going to be the name for their latest annual Christmas arena tour, based on saxophonist Lee Thompson’s new song of the same name. Madness Can’t Touch Us Now

Near the end of 1981, Madness released one of their most recognised songs: a cover of Labi Siffre's 1971 hit " It Must Be Love". [18] The song climbed to number 4 in the UK, and in 1983, the song peaked at number 33 in the US charts. [18] [20] In 1982, Madness released their only number 1 hit to date, " House of Fun", [21] which they played live on the British sitcom The Young Ones, and also reached number 1 in the album charts with their first compilation, Complete Madness (1982). Madness have secured their first number one for a studio album with Theatre Of The Absurd Presents C’est La Vie.

Playlists

In 1985, the label released the band's sixth studio album, Mad Not Mad. Barson's usual keyboard parts were filled by an emphasis on synthesisers provided by Steve Nieve of the Attractions. In later years, frontman Suggs has described the album as a "polished turd". [30] The album reached number 16 in the UK charts, which is the band's lowest position on the album charts to date. Despite the poor chart showing, the album was listed as number 55 in NME 's "All Time 100 Albums". [31] The singles for the album fared even worse, with " Yesterday's Men" peaking at number 18 in the UK charts. The subsequent singles, " Uncle Sam" and " Sweetest Girl", failed to make the top 20, which was a first for Madness singles. The album was preceded by the singles C'est La Vie and Baby Burglar. A new video featured these two singles plus a performances of Round We Go. L WT: “We were feeling a whole range of emotions throughout this whole process. I remember we were in Nashville when the war broke out in Ukraine and it was all very overwhelming. We felt quite far away from home when it was all going on and we were worried about it, it was all quite scary. So we channelled that into our writing and talked about it openly with the people we were working with. UK Singles & Albums Official Charts Company". Official Charts Company . L WT: “I think when you watch the news, for example, the light hearted things like music or acting or the entertainment come in at the end, because there's only so much we can take. I think that's probably why, in the mainstream world, a lot of the music being shown is quite empowering and feel-good.” Suggs’ father William McPherson was a heroin addict. Lee Thompson’s father was in and out of prison, with the future saxophonist part of an infamous teenage graffiti gang in North London with pianist Mike Barson. Meanwhile the band have begun writing new material of which 4BF, a tribute to Brian Ferry, is the first to be premiered. What is your relationship with country music at the moment and do you see yourself as part of one genre? CWT: “For us we want a career. We want to be able to keep doing this, we want to be able to keep touring and keep releasing music. The overnight fame is never what we wanted to get into, it’s never been a source of much fulfilment…” But they’re still able to play those songs with an exuberance of a band aware of their good fortune that, dysfunctionalities and all, they essentially still get on. W hen Madness launched new album Can’t Touch Us Now, they wanted to highlight just how much of a long-running institution the band are.

C WT: “Totally, it's so disciplined there. They come in at 11am and they finish at three, and then they go to another session or do something else. When you give people those time parameters, for some reason, you get the song out in time, whereas when writing in the UK and you don't have those parameters, you're just there until you get the song and you chat for longer, it's just less disciplined. I think discipline suits songwriting, for the most part – it depends on how you work, but yeah.” But it’s important to note that Madness are experts at not making such statements preachy – because such an empathetic band are happy for the listener to figure out a song’s message themselves. a b c Marcus, Greil. On the day of release, Ward Thomas will be taking to the stage at C2C Festival to mark the beginning of their tour, which will take in dates all over the UK throughout March and April. On 22 March 2013, the band performed outside the BBC Television Centre in a live broadcast for BBC Four.
