About this deal

It comes across as a bit restrained, even rounded off. One could consider the crisp sound being warm, but that is taking an optimistic perspective. While these speakers are reasonably compact, they’re not tiny, and they’re not particularly light, either: Some speakers down at this end of the market are smaller, and other lighter, being made predominantly of plastic, but the Pioneer DJ DM-40s have a reassuring wooden construction and weight to them. This usually translates to better sound quality, because the cabinet remains still as the speaker cones move to produce the sound. The speakers are also front ported, meaning there’s a slot in the front of each to allow air to move in and out of the unit for a fuller bass. Only after the volume is above 70%, one can start to notice unpleasant artifacts coming through. However, having them blast at just below that amount will be more than enough power for most casual uses. The other half of the story is the Production Mode. This mode aims to flatten out the response to a more neutral setting. The goal is to allow these monitors to pull double duty by being a viable option for music production where neutrality is critical. The DM 40 monitors are missing some strength and accuracy in the top end. Each speaker has 21W of power behind them – this is not a lot, but more than enough to practice your mixing skills comfortably, and casually enjoy music, movies, and games. These are especially helpful when placing your audio setup on a table because the table can act as a speaker extension itself.

The front mounted bass ports help the bass driver drop lower, moving more air as a result. Although most speakers feature a bass port, they are often found on the rear of the speaker. As a result most speakers suffer in performance if mounted close to a wall. Thankfully, Pioneer DJ have placed two ports on the front of the speaker, meaning the DM-40 is perfectly suited to being placed close to a wall. The inputs are certainly not extensive enough to suit a variety of applications, but they cover the essential needs. In any case, adapters can be of help if one wants more options. There is a headphone port at the front of the master speaker for easy access when you want to switch to a different listening experience. Efficient and Smart DesignFrom things like simple Bluetooth speakers to a more powerful set of active floor-standers, they are definitely becoming more and more popular. We’ve seen a few active DJ monitors in stores before but after a little hiatus, we now have something new to look at with the new Pioneer DM40 monitors speakers. Especially if you want to practice your DJing skills, having a pair of speakers that make you want to move is an essential point to cover. This 2-way active speaker has an AB amplifier embedded in the left speaker. You’ll also find connections and controls for the speaker on the left speaker. One limitation to this speaker is that you can't swap which speaker functions as a left or right speaker. If you want a flexible speaker placement, you can achieve it with the available audio connections and how long your power cable is. The best part is that it has comprehensive coverage that engulfs a room. Of course, it's thanks to the diffuser that deploys the classic Pioneer DECO technology to ensure the high frequencies it produces spread across the room. As a result, you could be far away from the speaker but still hear the music it plays. However, you have to be in the same room as the speaker to listen to the song's being played. The best thing about the diffuser is that it ensures the speaker only produces clear and smooth sounds that won't be polluted by distortions, regardless of how high you increase the volume. If you need a speaker that defies the regular square shape that other speakers come with, this speaker is an excellent choice for you. It is oval-shaped, lightweight, and portable. This speaker boasts Bluetooth connectivity with a fantastic range. The only downside to this speaker is that it is not that great when you try to play music at lower volumes.

The second-best option is getting desk stands, and the third-best option is having some foam cushions, which Pioneer DJs kindly supply with their speakers. The big “new” feature is a switch marked “DJ” and “production”. This activates two modes of the built-in DSP, designed for, as it says, DJing and producing. More about the difference that makes in a second. The DM 40’s come in a pretty small size factor. They aren’t so tiny and light that this would be a selling point, but the speakers sure won’t crowd your room. Deliveries will be made subject to the terms and conditions of the courier company. djkit.com will not be held responsible for late deliveries. The low end is most certainly accentuated on the Pioneer DM-40s. Whether that is good, depends on what you want from your monitors.

Firstly, they sound great for the price. Full sound, good bass for the size of speaker, nice and clear. Unlike what you might have heard before about budget speakers and how they sound, this budget speaker seems to raise the bar for how budget speakers should sound. For starters, beginner DJ would love the punch it produces when they play songs through it. It doesn't punch as hard as premium speakers, but I think it's simply impressive, especially for a portable budget speaker. What does stand out is that Pioneer succeeded in delivering on its promise of low distortion. Even as the speakers get quite loud, there is no noticeable harshness. The shift is noticeable, albeit not exactly massive. For light studio tasks, it is capable, and they are a functional pair of monitors for light mixing and editing work.
