About this deal

Another early Smiths watch produced at the Cheltenham factory. You can just make out the “Made in England” at the bottom of the dial. This one has a chrome-plated case showing a lot of wear, consistent with the fact that this would have been an expensive item for the average person, costing around two weeks wages at 1947 prices. For the trust's initial stage one response did not admit of anything other than 'bruises'. It then spent considerable time spinning, and detailing how bumpers had now been fitted to rails on beds to avoid this.

Six year old boys, however, are not too worried by mud and puddles. What impressed me about our new home was the orchard at the bottom of the garden, the woods at the top of the road, and the fields which seemed to stretch for miles and miles, waiting to be explored. GAY LANEAlthough you may have heard the saying that Great Britain is the mother of Parliaments, you might be less aware that the UK is also often seen as the mother of modern watchmaking. On the south side of the south transept is the freestone effigy of a knight of c. 1270, in a later cusped I feel that there was no need for the GP to exit the house at all. He could have sent his assistant out to the car alone to handle call duties and alert him. He missed his patient dying.” From the outset Smiths always had a full fixture list including all the teams in the Cheltenham area and up into the Cotswolds and beyond to junior clubs in Bristol, Bath, Oxford and down to South Wales. Fifty two semi-detached houses were built by Smiths for some of the first workers who came down from London. They were laid out around two cul-de-sacs which from early on were called the First and Second Circles on account of the grass 'roundabouts' which were a feature of each road. There were two styles of house on the estate. We lived in the 'standard' version which had a hallway, separate living and dining rooms (with picture rails around the walls), and a kitchen. Upstairs there was a landing, three bedrooms and a bathroom. The windows had metal frames with small panes of glass.

Then, for the second time in the Century, Someone started a War. Bombs fell on our towns and cities, and the Powers-That-Be decided to uproot a factory from West London and plant it barely a mile from the centre of the village. The year was 1940... A Personal Note Director for safety and medical director, Professor Mark Pietroni, said the trust would like to extend their sympathies to Mr Smith following the loss of his mother more recently, and his father, several years ago, both of whom received care in our hospitals. Smiths Aerospace left Bishops Cleeve in 2007 and GE Aviation became the new landlords and then Cheltenham RFC took over the management of the clubhouse and ground in 2011. What a trip down memory lane. I remember both Barry and Boggy. "Hello chaps". I remember that Davey character wasn't quite my cup of tea but his wife was always very friendly and welcoming. I wonder if anyone remembers me, 'Toollie' everyone called me. Only about 5 foot tall, wore glasses, but I was a bit of a Cassanova in my younger days.I thank Dave for this reminder of our happy childhood in Bishops Cleeve. I now live near Stratford-upon-avon and would like to add some memories at some stage.Thank Dave once again. the chancel. (fn. 670) In 1846 a National I would like to round off this chapter on the Original Meadoway by paying tribute to some of the young people who made a particular impression on me all those years ago. Derek Stammers was one of the 'Big Kids', and has already been mentioned as the unofficial holder of the Cheltenham to Meadoway cycling record. He had always been keen on bikes and soon after leaving school he bought an Italian road racer made by Frejus - a beautiful machine. It was not long before he had the time down to single figures, and I'm sure that his younger brother Gerald told me that Derek eventually achieved an incredible seven minutes. I don't think you could do that now because of the traffic lights and roundabouts on the route. I believe that Derek was also the founder member of the Severn Valley cycling club which organized the Tour of the Cotswolds annual road race. the name of the principal company of the Smiths group was changed from S. Smith and Sons (England) Ltd to Smiths Industries.
