About this deal

Fanatec produces some of the best-licensed wheel rims on the market, yet they come at a price. SimuCube boasts much more customisability, and a wider range of steering wheels to choose from.

When it comes to steering wheels, Thrustmaster is definitely the cheaper option. Although they do offer a lot of intermediate racing wheels, they also have a couple of entry level options for beginner sim racers. They offer wheels for PC, Xbox, and PlayStation, and so they are ideal for sim racers on all of the major platforms. They both take on a rather extravagant design, much more reminiscent of sim racing wheels of past years than the serious design forms that brands like Fanatec and Simucube utilise. The exterior of the steering wheel part itself is also all-plastic, without the metal parts that make these wheels seem a bit less toy-like. There's still sports car-like metal spoke shifters behind the wheel, though. Belt-drive wheels were often looked upon more fondly, as you rarely feel anything from the internal belt. This makes them much smoother to race with than gear-driven racing wheels. The ClubSport Universal Hub V2 for Xbox ensures compatibility with Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S on all connected Fanatec hardware. The hub is compatible with all Fanatec wheel rims and third-party rims using the 6 x 70 mm or 3 x 50 mm bolt pattern, such as Sparco, MOMO, or OMP. Fully assembled and pre-configured to mount the Fanatec Wheel Rim GT or similar, the hub features improved electronics that allow firmware updates. ClubSport Steering Wheel Flat 2 V2 for XBOX and PC OnlyA direct drive wheel differs from other racing wheels by mounting the internal motor directly to the motor shaft. Fanatec’s FluxBarrier technology smoothes and quiets the wheelbase in operation. The CSL DD is nearly silent and considerably quieter than the CSL Elite and CSW2.5. Even after hours of driving at max torque, the device remains cool, indicating that cooling is not a concern. Fanatec CSL DD with boost kit

This gives you multiple options to combine hardware of different vendors the way you want. Most simulation games on Windows PCs will allow you to use combinations like: Logitech wheel, Thrustmaster shifter and Fanatec pedals for example. Since Fanatec provides USB solutions for more or less every kind of hardware (shifter/handbrake by USB adapter, USB pedals, USB wheels, etc.) the possibilities to build your perfect setup are endless. He is looking at upgrading again, but he is very reluctant to invest in either of these companies because of his past issue and the constant negative comments we can find online. I tell him to go straight to DD but he is not willing to spend that amount at this time. Now, in 2023, the only Fanatec wheels you can buy (unless shopping second-hand) are direct drive wheels. And these are broken down into two categories; more accessible small-form-factor direct drive wheels, and larger, more expensive, high-performing wheels. You may be new to sim racing or looking for a few upgrades to improve your experience. Whatever the reason, updates are always exciting with all of the equipment choices we have today as sim racers. Along the journey, Fanatec has always been there, so in today’s feature-length article we’re going to dissect the Fanatec ecosystem and look at each of their sim racing products in our brand-new buyer’s guide. Direct drive sim wheels such as those from Simucube have pushed the strength of direct drive wheels above 30Nm of peak torque. The DD1 and DD2 wheel bases are a few years older than the smaller wheel bases, but the performance on offer is staggering. Both wheel bases are around double the physical size of the smaller CSL DD and GT DD Pro, but they offer well over double the performance. Fanatec makes some of the best, and most expensive, racing wheels going. The Fanatec CSL Elite is actually one of its more affordable models, made with a mainstream audience in mind, not least because it supports consoles rather than just the PC. Fanatec offers wheels for PC, Xbox and PlayStation as well, and so there are options for gamers that use both console and computer for their sim racing. Fanatec is definitely geared more towards the experienced sim racer, with their wheels being priced higher than most of Thrustmaster’s options.

The main issue with trying to use Fanatec pedals with a Thrustmaster wheel Xbox or Fanatec pedals with a Thrustmaster wheel PS5, is that these consoles only support 1 USB input device. This means that both Xbox and PS5 can only have 1 input device plugged in at once. Connecting Fanatec pedals and a Thrustmaster wheel in to separate USB ports counts as 2 inputs, and therefore wouldn’t work on Xbox or PS5 out of the box. You will require an adapter. First, the G29 is more affordable than the direct Thrustmaster alternatives, the T300 series wheels. The quality of the wheel itself is great too. There’s a metal core and leather stitched over the parts your hands grip.
