About this deal

The advanced manual for the FT–891 helpfully provides a section called ‘Tools for Comfortable and Effective Reception’, so I began configuring the radio using the guidance there. We will now work on your transmit audio level. First, we need the radio to display the ALC level during transmit. This is done by going to the Settings Mode, FUNCTION-2 screen, and selecting MTR (meter). You then select ALC from the available options. Exit the Settings Mode, and you will now see an “ALC” indicator below the frequency. During transmit, the meter will increase from the left towards a visual “bump” just above the signal indicator. If you are beyond the “bump”, you have too much audio signal.

SCU-17 USB Interface Unit Instruction Manual rev. 2018– Instructions to install the USB driver software – follow directions before plugging radio to computer Reports vary on the power consumption of the FT–891. It certainly isn’t as high as the 2.0A documented in the user guide.I would recommend this radio for anyone on a budget, or wanting something robust for the field that is 100 watts capable as long as they are willing to work with the radio to learn it’s operation. If you are expecting to work it in a contest right out of the box, this is not the radio for you. Go get something twice the price. FT-891 USB Driver Virtual COM Port Driver (Windows 11/10)– Zipped version of the USB driver software I added a Behringer xm8500 mic, and a homebrew patch cable, and my audio showed dramatic improvement -- but I eventually figured out good enough settings for the hand mic that I do not bother (see my other settings article on this blog). Please pay attention to the ALC, however. Keep it peaking at midpoint. Set it too high, and your signal will appear louder on the meter, but you might splatter. FT-891 transceivers fully support the ATAS-25 and ATAS-120A Active Tuning Antenna System (optional), allowing for plug-and-play field and mobile operation.

I almost can mimic the receive of my IC751A (comparing here apples and oranges, although a vintage radio, has still its place today and I would say has a soothing receive compared to the nowaday digital fatiguing radios) with both contour and IF shift, it has a nicer less "noisy" receive (although in itself this radio is not as "noisy" as its predecessors). If anyone is looking for a really great sounding radio for SWL then if you can the 891 is well worth the extra money, look out for a 2nd hand one. The 891 is not very sensitive on Longwave but using the preamp it does help a lot. FT-891 transceivers provide a stable 100 watts (25W AM) of high-power output. High reliability is assured by Yaesu's careful circuit design with efficient thermostatically controlled dual internal fans and a diecast heat-transferring chassis. Stellar signal quality – This radio uses Yaesu’s bit floating point Digital Signal Processing (DSP) for crystal clear audio quality. Products to be reviewed typically should be tangible ham radio related items such as radios, antennas, towers, test equipment, feedlines, etc.No obscenities, discriminatory, abusive, or other content not suitable in public or for younger readers. By the way , I love to listen with headphones and yes, there is an annoying hiss of the 891 that is non existent on the 7300 but I believe there is a resistor mod to eliminate this , I must try it. The FT-891 has a very effective Noise Blanker. On par with Drake's from the 4-Line. Of course it has DSP as well, but the DSP is a bit "heavy handed". Adjusted to "1" is quite nice. Above "1" it is just too much. I run an outboard DSP. An original JPS NIR-12 Dual DSP. It is more versatile than the FT-891's DSP, but it's a nice feature in the FT-891 for the times you're not using an outboard DSP.

The 32 but high speed floating point DSP (max 3000 MIPS) provides effective cancellation/reduction (DNR) of the random noise that is frequently frustrating in the HF frequencies. Also the AUTO NOTHC (DNF) automatically eliminates the dominant beat tone. The CONTOUR and the APF are very effective receiver noise reduction tools in the HF bands operations. The YAESU original DSP QRM and noise reduction functions are provided. TCXO provides ±0.5 ppm High frequency stability (-10°C to +50°C) Stable 100 Watt Output The FT-891 provides stable 100 Watts (25W AM) of high power output. High reliability is assured by the transmitters careful circuit design with efficient thermostatically-controlled Dual internal fans and the die cast heat transferring chassis. 32-Bit IF DSP Provides effective and optimized QRM rejection The 32 bit high speed floating Point DSP (max 3000 MIPS) provides effective cancellation/reduction (DNR) of the random noise that is frequently frustrating while on the HF bands. The highly optimized AUTO NOTCH (DNF) automatically eliminates dominant beat tones, and the CONTOUR, and the APF, are very effective receiver noise reduction tools during HF band operations. USB Connection A native USB connection supports PC connectivity with a single cable, allowing for full rig control via a virtual serial port connection (VCP). Features for Ease of Operation • Large diameter Main Tuning Dial (1.6” / 41mm) with Torque adjustment

This review will cover every negative of the FT-891 I have noticed, but keep in mind that I feel it's a decent value, and the most performance you're going to find at this price-point. Some will want to tear this radio apart, because it's not the second coming of the FT-857, or because some test lab stats aren't absolute perfection, but in my experience, this radio is cheap way to get some decent performance. I sold-off my Elecraft KX2 for this rig (and I loved that radio). I'm still happy doing so, because I have a lot more power available. With the downward sun cycle, having extra power on command is not such a bad thing! Measuring 6.1 in. x 2.0 in. x 8.6 in. (155 x 52 x 218 mm), FT-891 transceivers are innovative Multi-band, Multi-mode Mobile/Portable transceivers with a rugged case design. Uncompromising Receiver Circuit Design Ensures Excellent Performance • Triple conversion with a 1st IF frequency of 69.450 MHz (SSB/CW/AM
