This is not the first whisky to be finished in an ale cask. Grant’s, like Glenfiddich owned by William Grant & Sons, released an Ale Cask whisky. And curiously there have been experiments with single malt finished in ale casks too. On the nose: much better, much more classic Speyside. From a gentle grassy intro, through orange and vanilla, to sultanas and dried apricots. Buttermilk and honey.

PALATE: Fruity sweetness and spice. Hints of dried citrus, dry grass and wood dust. Bits of cinnamon and vanilla. Adding water softens the citrus and the spice somewhat. It was clear that Glenfiddich XX was considerably more popular, so I had to add this to my tasting list and capture the tasting notes. The Glenfiddich 12-Year-Old is matured in Spanish sherry oak and American bourbon casks. It has notes of pear, malt, cream, butterscotch, and oak as well as a mellow and smooth finish. The Glenfiddich 15 Year Records the default button state of the corresponding category & the status of CCPA. It’s an unorthodox whisky to be sure, but much to my surprise it’s a completely worthwhile one. I think it’s because Glenfiddich is not really mixing whiskies at random but is rather mixing these whiskies with a bit of a guided hand. There’s some method to the madness here, perhaps thanks to a benevolent intelligent designer working behind the scenes. How else would the mix of 17 bourbon casks and just 3 wine casks come to be if each of the 20 ambassadors was selecting in a vacuum?
