Expandable sounds, patterns, and phrases. Compose from a curated collection of built-in beats, phrases, and sounds, all expertly crafted by renowned artists and sound designers. And the MC-101 is part of an expandable platform. So, when you're ready for more, or want to explore new genres and styles, you can easily change things up by adding new content. At the surface level, the Syntakt and MC-101 are both similar in that they’re both an interesting combination of groovebox, drum machine, sequencer, and synthesizer. But they’re also very different from one another. For more information, please visit: https://www.roland.com/global/products/mc-101/ Watch video. Roland MC-101: Resampling When it came to using my own samples I hit a couple of snags. First, samples could only be added to the memory card as a single giant pool. The consequence was poor navigation and frequent stalls of the OS while trying to scroll the list. The TR‑8S has the same problem, so I didn't hold out much hope of this changing. I was happily proven wrong when a system update brought folder navigation, and several other major feature requests. You can record patterns in real time, or use the Step buttons to enter triggers. Clips can be up to 128 steps long (eight bars at the standard resolution). Record quantising is available, or you can add quantisation by degrees to clips after the fact — nice!

The default Easy mode gangs all the filters, VCAs and mod sources. This is a stroke of genius, making the synth mimic a more traditional architecture of multiple oscillators mixing into a single shaping stage. In Advanced Edit all layers are independent. A final EQ and Effects stage is shared. There's so much to choose from on the effects front, with classic modulation effects, filters and newer multi-step rhythmic effects. Saturation and distortion effects are also very well catered for. For more information, please visit: https://www.roland.com/global/products/mc-101/ Watch video. Roland MC-101: Changing Clip Length You can combine loops and one-shots with melodic phrases and even important audio files and input MIDI sequences. With the new Version 1.60 update, the MC-101 GROOVEBOXES continue to evolve with inspiring features for music creation and live performance. In this video, Peter Brown gives you an overview of the beatmaking possibilities of the Roland MC-101. This overview looks at some of the sounds and performance techniques to get you making music anywhere.

Roland MC-101: Sequencing Melodies and Notes A powerful new arpeggiator livens up your productions with tasty melodic lines and real-time control over motif, rhythmic variation, octave, and hold on/off. Overall this device is criminally underrated, it can replace a bunch of volcas and an external sequencer (maybe not in terms of sound but in terms of music making) and it's very competitive with Syntakt that costs almost double than that and its much less portable. Syntakt might have an edge on some sounds (synths definitely not drum ones) but for a prototyping and fun to use device does this mattter? So my comparison and reference is these devices - please don't feel offended for your favorite brand if I am doing too many comparisons!

This can vary depending on the specifications of the batteries, capacity of the batteries, and the conditions of use.

Whichever way you choose to record, you can either work quantised to a grid, completely unquantized to capture the true human performance, or somewhere in between for a little natural shuffle. Computerless Setup Things are simpler at the rear of the MC‑101, with just a USB port, SD card slot, MIDI I/O ports and stereo audio outs. Want some help getting started with your MC-101? Roland have created a full video manual to help you along the way. Specifications And to make use of all these new sounds, there is now an increased number of available Scenes! 128 in fact for even more flexibility in live arranging. This may be a slightly ridiculous comparison and choice, but I currently own both the Syntakt and the MC-101 and I’ve decided I need to downsize my hardware setup and focus more on music making again by leveraging the DAW as the main production center instead of my MPC. I had a really good run with the MPC but I feel done with that now. I also have a couple of other hardware synths that are just collecting dust and probably need to go as well.
