About this deal

Sometimes you’ll see a pink color bleeding through your primer. You may wonder where the pink is coming from. This is wood tannins coming through and it almost always requires a shellac-based primer. Each type of primer may adhere better to different surfaces. The following details the best primer type for common household surfaces: Always wear appropriate PPE, including safety glasses, gloves, and a dust mask, particularly when sanding and using chemicals like primer and paint.

H225 Highly flammable liquid and vapourH317 May cause an allergic skin reaction.H318 Causes serious eye damage. A: Painting directly over knots without using a primer is not recommended, as this increases the likelihood of knots bleeding through the paint.Water, mold, and rust stains are tough to cover, but odors are even harder to conceal. Smoke, pet urine, and food odors often require using an oil-based or shellac-based primer to seal them into the surface before painting. However, Kilz Restoration interior primer offers the same performance as oil-based primers but with the easy cleanup convenience of water-based paint. Earlier, we talked about how we can’t paint over a knot that is oozing sap because the sap will continue to ooze and bleed through our paint. If we’re building DIY furniture from scratch and planning to paint our project, we may want to consider using wood that doesn’t have any knots. Or we could cut our parts to avoid using knots in our project. Otherwise, we’ll need to take some extra steps to keep the knots from bleeding through the paint.

Solution:Clean the sap residue using a fine-grit sandpaper or a solvent recommended for removing sap from wood (e.g., mineral spirits). Allow the solvent to evaporate, and then reapply primer and paint.Additionally, use proper sanding and cleaning techniques to create a smooth and even surface before painting. Always follow manufacturer recommendations and best practices to ensure the longevity and quality of your finished work. Troubleshooting Issue: The primer or paint layers were not allowed to dry thoroughly before applying additional coats, leading to poor adhesion and potential knot bleeding. Now, how to do convert wood trim and cabinets to paint…we have it all covered for you, not literally!

The knot (and the rest of our project) can be painted with two coats of quality paint after the Zinsser BIN Primer has been applied. Building from Scratch A: This is a very common issue and you can see a typical example of it in the photo above. In this case the staining even came through heavy coats of oil-based paint. There doesn’t seem to be any amount of paint that can stop this, so what can you do? The issue is especially big with softwoods such as pine and spruce. What paint you will use? Pros are getting an oil-like appearance with Ben Moore’s Advance and we explain why in this post, and how to apply it in the post on painting over stained trim.Issue: Environmental factors, such as high humidity or temperature, are affecting the drying process, causing the paint to blister or peel around the knots. How to paint trim is a common question, and it’s easier than you think: read the short how-to paint trim.
