Although this novel is class-ridden, and the women's roles are very much of their time, it is told with a wry humour which I had forgotten in the aftermath of all the adaptations. The first of these goes by the name of "Village of the Damned", from 1960, and was followed shortly by a sequel "Children of the Damned". John Carpenter then remade "Village of the Damned" .in 1995. All these are good chilling films, but they are bound to lose the feel of the original text. This is a straightforward and somewhat leisurely story that touches on very deep and difficult themes, mostly indirectly, but explicitly in the last quarter. The classic science fiction horror novel of possessed children that inspired the terrifying Village of the Damned films.

The resultant children of Midwich do not belong to their parents: all are blond, all are golden-eyed. They grow up too fast and their minds exhibit frightening abilities that give them control over others. The book is also narrated by a rather faceless character in the village. Apart from the fact that he was out of town on the night of the unexplainable incident and was vaguely acquainted with a military man investigating the incident, he doesn’t have any major part in the story and it seems odd to have such a bland character telling the story. I would have preferred it to be told from a third person point of view. A Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer remake to have begun filming during 1981 was cancelled. This is my 2018 Halloween read and I chose it off an internet list of this century's best horror novels. This is also the book that the films Village of the Damned is based on. One was 1960 and the other was 1995. I have yet to see either. When the 31 boys and 30 girls are born, they appear normal, except for their unusual golden eyes, light blonde hair and pale, silvery skin. The children have none of the genetic characteristics of their mothers. As they grow up, it becomes increasingly apparent that they are, at least in some respects, not human. They possess telepathic abilities and can control others' actions. The Children (they are referred to with a capital C) have two distinct group minds, one for the boys and another for the girls. Their physical development is accelerated compared with that of humans; upon reaching the age of nine, they appear to be sixteen-year-olds. In other villages sleepy-eyed men left their cottages and encountered their workmates with sleepy good mornings; in Midwich no one encountered anyone. Y su intento de llevar una situación extraordinaria a un pueblo ordinario con habitantes comunes y que prevalezca cierta "lógica". Ademas de un respectivo planteo sobre la creación, la evolución, la supervivencia y la destrucción de la humanidad.An easy read, at first glance, with dated language and characters. But there is more to it than meets the eye. From the start, it is quite clear that the main protagonist of the novel is the village itself: the collective of Midwich, proudly present in almost all chapter headings. And it is caught in a fairy tale style beauty sleep in the beginning, thus displaying its innocence, or, - as one might feel tempted to say - virginity: There are. The handful of women who go for terminations have their minds controlled and walk away. Everyone resigns themselves to not being able to leave Midwich. When the babies are born they grow faster than normal and soon start to exhibit what no one near them seems to feel are terrifying tele-cum-psychopathic behaviours.
