Courses for beginners, where you will learn to speak about everyday activities such as your work, family and friends, and hobbies. Our group did not have a Welsh-speaking actor so I was limited to reading aloud the stage directions and lip-syncing a Welsh song (Dacw ‘Nghariad by Eve Goodman). Welsh publishing house Y Lolfa, with the support of a publishing grant from the Books Council of Wales, will publish the book in both Welsh and English, and it will be available to buy in the spring. In recent years more resources have been put into the Welsh language by the Welsh Government and local councils to try and meet the goal of a million Welsh speakers by 2050. Last year more than 17,000 people were learning Welsh with the Dysgu Cymraeg programme alone.

But why are people learning? Popular reasons are to enhance career prospects, to help children in Welsh-medium education, to connect with heritage, and for fun.The series is celebrated through the Amdani Festival, which will be held virtually this year between 27 February and 3 March, providing learners with opportunities to enjoy activities and events that are linked to reading in Welsh. Families and children from the North Wales Africa Society will see their own story in print this year as Y Lolfa prepares to publish The Fish Princess – a story created by the families through workshops with author Casia Wiliam and illustrator Jac Jones.
