Build up your skin tolerance. Wear the sheet for 4 hours daily for two days. Then increase to time advised by your therapist. Safetac is a soft silicone adhesive technology. Mepiform dressings adhere gently to the skin and protect the scar tissue. The Safetac technology allows the dressing to be changed without causing pain. It can be lifted from the skin without losing its adhesive properties, allowing for reapplication if inspection is needed. Widened scars appear when surgical wounds are stretched as a result of skin tension during the healing process. They are generally pale in colour, flat, soft and symptomless, but can be aesthetically displeasing . Mepiform should optimally be worn for 24 hours a day. Remove the dressing once per day for inspection and washing of the skin. The dressing can then be reapplied. Mepiform should under normal conditions be changed every 3 - 7 days or when the adherent properties of the dressing are no longer sufficient. Middelkoop et al found the use of Mepiform was associated with a significant improvement in hypertrophic scars in a study involving 12 patients.
Mepiform can soften, fade and flatten your scar and improve the appearance of your skin. However, some evidence of the scar may remain.Mepiform can be used on newly healed closed wounds to prevent the formation of red and raised scars. Topical silicone empirically has been shown to have a positive impact on hypertrophic and keloid scars. Mepiform ® should optimally be worn 24 hours a day. It is recommended that Mepiform is removed once a day (e.g., when showering or bathing) for inspection and washing of the skin. For prophylactic treatment, Mepiform should be used for 2–6 months depending on the condition of the scar. Mepiform is a thin, discreet and flexible dressing consisting of a laminate (polyurethane and nonwoven) covered with a soft silicone gel.
When applying Mepiform, make sure the area is dry. When used together with ointment or cream, ensure the dressing covers an area beyond the cream. Mepiform is designed for the management of old and new hypertrophic scars, keloids and closed wounds which may prevent the formation of hypertrophic and keloids scars. Should maceration or rash occur, remove the dressing and allow the skin to recover until the symptom has disappeared, then continue treatment gradually increasing therapy time. If the symptom persists, discontinue use and consult a physician for advice. There are different brands of silicone gel sheet available. Your therapist will assess which one is most suitable for your scar and demonstrate how to use it by providing you with a small sample. We request that your GP provide an ongoing supply. Wash the gel sheet daily using lukewarm soapy water, rinse well and dry by patting it with a non-fluffy towel. Mepiform consists of a polyurethane and viscose non-woven laminate covered with a soft silicone gel. Hypertrophic scars are seen in approximately 50 percent of wounds after surgery and more than 50 percent of healed deep burns. They are generally red, raised and itchy and appear within the boundaries of wounds. Topical silicone has widely been shown to have a positive impact on hypertrophic scars and keloids. Mepiform dressings should be worn for a minimum of 12 hours daily, and if possible 24 hours per day, with twice daily washing. The dressing can be reapplied. It may take from 3 months up to a year or more to improve an old scar, depending on the condition of the scar tissue. For prophylactic treatment, Mepiform treatment should begin soon after surgical closure, when the incision has fully epithelialised, and be continued for at least 1 month.
