About this deal

This Ken-Tool Lug Wrench is both the largest and heaviest option on our list. While it doesn’t give you the most possible leverage compared to some of the premium options on our list, at 23” it’s more than most lug wrenches and should provide more than enough leverage for you. That’s especially true if you keep your lug wrench in the trunk and it’s full of other stuff. It’s not a huge deal, but it’s a nice additional perk. It’s a little heavier than our top choice, but at 3.65 pounds it’s still a lightweight option. Not only that, but this lug wrench is bright green. While that doesn’t do a thing for the performance, it can make it a bit easier to find. It’s not that we think the extension will affect the final torque spec, it’s just that all it takes is for you to get a little off-center to get an errant reading. If you use it properly there shouldn’t be a problem though. Things move slowly in the torque wrench world and, like the Draper, this is a returnee from our last test. Despite its age, it was the most accurate in the tests, easily inside the four per cent tolerance and just one per cent out at the 60 per cent measure.

It’s easy to think of torque wrenches as tools only for professionals, but even a simple job like changing a wheel is done better – and with less risk of failure or damage – if you use one. However, all that brute strength isn’t very useful if you can’t control the tool. Fortunately, impact wrenches are extremely comfortable to use because the concussive blows smoothly transfer most of that high-energy torque directly to the fastener, not to your hand, wrist, or arm. As a result, the twisting motion—known as reactionary torque—that you feel when using an electric drill is virtually eliminated. Batteries: Volts and Amp Hours (Ah) If you’re looking for a top-notch torque wrench you can rely on year after year, then you really should consider GearWrench’s Micrometer Torque Wrench. GearWrench is one of the top names in the industry, and with products like this torque wrench, it’s not hard to see why.Like the Halfords pair, this comes in a foam insert for storing in a tool chest but, unlike them, there’s no additional plastic case. It’s a touch longer than the lookalikes and has easier-to-read metric and imperial scales although, as on others, the latter is in less-than-helpful fractions. But even with all these great things, we couldn’t put it any higher up on our list simply because it’s not quite as universal as our top options.

Impact Wrench - Finding the Best Impact How to Choose an Impact Wrench - Finding the Best Impact

Historically, impact wrenches were predominantly pneumatic, or air powered, which left them squarely in the domain of professional mechanics. To run a typical 1⁄2-inch pneumatic impact wrench, you usually need an air compressor putting out close to 100 psi—a significant investment. First is the maximum torque value. At 80 ft/lbs it’s high enough for most DIY jobs, but there’s certainly a chance you’ll come across a job calling for higher torque specs. Second, it’s not the most durable option. An impact wrench is used for many different purposes in a wide range of industries. Car repairs, maintaining heavy plant/equipment, assembling products and big construction projects are some examples of common impact wrench applications. If you’re working on any task or job that calls for a high torque output, you’ll soon find that few options are as effective as these power tools. It’s extremely heavy duty too, so you don’t have to worry about anything happening to it if you’re dealing with stubborn lug nuts. In fact, this lug wrench comes with a lifetime guarantee, so in the rare event that something does happen to it, they’ll replace it for you for free. The last thing you want to happen when you’re driving is to get a flat tire and have no way to fix it. That’s why you need a lug wrench. But you also don’t want to assume you’re good to go only to find that your cheap lug wrench can’t do the job when you need it most. A big factor in this cost is the size of the torque wrench. Torque wrenches with higher calibrations tend to cost a little bit more than smaller torque wrenches. One of the stand-out features of an impact wrench is the substantial level of torque output you can achieve. Impact wrench torque is created by a hammering mechanism that delivers strong, concussive blows extremely fast. Most options also let you choose from different impact wrench torque settings too – depending on the project and force you need. These lug wrenches come in different sizes, and at 20” it’s a great combination of compact size and the ability to generate torque. It’s also lightweight at just over 3-pounds so it’s easy for just about anyone to pull out and use.

And as an intermediate option, it has a price to match. You don’t have to break the bank to get this Lexivon Torque Wrench, but you’re also not spending pennies for something you know you’ll have to replace at some point down the road. Now that you know a little more about what to look for in a torque wrench and how to care for one, now it’s time to learn a little bit about using them. Each lug on your vehicle has six sides, which is why it’s best to get a 6-point lug wrench. 12-point lug wrenches let you use more angles, but the tradeoff is that it’s more likely you’ll round off the lugs. This tool is the lightest option on our list, weighing just 1.5 pounds. And while we don’t view it as the most durable product, it does come with a lifetime warranty, so you’ll never have to pay to replace it. Our in-house experts are always on hand to offer air or electric impact wrench buying advice and to provide bespoke care – whatever the task you’re working on. A Performance Tool product is our top choice, and while this option from them didn’t quite earn that honor it’s still a great choice. It’s a lot like our top choice, but instead of a 20” size this one is more compact at 14”. Amp hours (Ah) equals the number of amps that the battery will discharge, continuously, for an hour. Think of amp hours like the volume of a gas tank—a bigger number equals more gas. IPM vs. RPM But if you store them properly the amount of time they’ll last really comes down to how much you use them. If you’re only occasionally using the torque wrench for a DIY project, you don’t have to worry as much.
