About this deal

At one point, Rian Johnson mulled having Blanc inexplicably speak in a different accent in each film.

Glass Onion True Story: Who Every Character Is Based On Glass Onion True Story: Who Every Character Is Based On

Curious to learn what Rian’s outrageously entertaining sequel is competing against at the 95th Oscars? Monáe’s spectacular performance gives us something substantial to hold onto in this transactional world. The celebrity cameos are a consistent hoot, but Monáe—especially in her interactions with Craig—provides the necessary emotional heft and deeper meaning. Hudson’s performance is also more complex than we might initially expect. She combines an infectious ditziness reminiscent of her glorious mother, Goldie Hawn, with the kind of depth and vulnerability she displayed in her Oscar-nominated supporting work in “ Almost Famous.” It’s an enjoyable change of pace to see the normally likable Bautista play such an obnoxious figure. And Craig offers slightly different versions of Blanc, depending on the situation; his technical precision is impressive, as always. Daniel Craig worked with an accent coach for Glass Onion, as he was worried about performing a pastiche of the Southern accent he used in the first film. He’s Lord Asriel in the 2007 film adaptation of The Golden Compass, which did not do nearly as well as its television series adaptation.

He had a role in Kenneth Branagh’s remake of Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express (2017). In other words, if you’re expecting a Knives Out repeat, don’t. Johnson, whose original screenplay for Knives Out was nominated for an Academy Award, wanted everything about this next film to look and feel as different as possible. Along with Christie’s novels, he looked to “tropical getaway murder mystery” films like 1982’s Evil Under the Sun, and in particular, 1973’s The Last of Sheila, for inspiration. Written by Stephen Sondheim and Anthony Perkins, and starring the likes of Raquel Welch, Ian McShane, and Dyan Cannon, Sheila’s sun-soaked tale about a group of glamorous socialites whose pleasure cruise turns sour is one of his “all-time favorites.”

She was in The Killer Inside Me by Jim Thompson (2010), in which nothing good happens to anyone, because Jim Thompson. You definitely get to know him a little bit better,” he says. “In the first one, because of the way it was structured, Marta, Ana de Armas’ character, was very much the protagonist. In a big way, Blanc was the threat. He was almost the antagonist in terms of just the story structure, because you were worried, even as they got closer, that he was going to catch her and he was going to have to turn her over at the end. So Blanc was always outside of the sphere of our protagonist and was a little bit more of an enigma in the first movie. Whereas, in this one, Blanc gets an invitation to come to this murder mystery on this island. We’re very much meeting these people and getting into this world through his eyes.” Glass Onion is only nominated for one Academy Award and that’s in the aforementioned Best Adapted Screenplay category. It’s certainly in with a chance of winning, especially considering the many twists and turns that the screenplay takes and it’s a rather dialogue-heavy experience.

Very little is known about Blanc's history. He comes from the southern United States, and his father worked as a detective, but has since retired. He was journalist Mikael Blomkvist in the U.S. adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larrson (2011). I want it to be in America," he told Insider. "There's a lot of tempting things of going to Paris or the Alps but I feel it's really important that these are American movies.Another character draws more parallels between Miles Bron and Steve Jobs, with Lionel Toussaint being akin to Steve Wozniak. Lionel is the head engineer of Miles' company and often is asked to make Miles' ideas happen as he comes up with them. This is similar in some ways to the real-life relationship between Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. Where Jobs was the entrepreneurial, business-minded, designer side of Apple, Wozniak was often considered the genius, engineering, programming side. This is portrayed in the Glass Onion movie through Miles and Leslie Odom Jr's Lionel, with the latter being introduced as someone who waits on the former's ideas and tests/creates them. He appeared as Glossu Rabban Harkonnen in the 2021 adaptation of Frank Hebert’s Dune, and will reprise his role in Dune Part 2, which is coming in the next year or so. Less a traditional sequel than the second installment in a narratively cohesive universe, Glass Onion has its roots in Johnson’s longtime love affair with Agatha Christie, whose most famous character, Detective Hercule Poirot, drops into no less than 33 novels — all with different tones, structures and plots.
