About this deal

The duality of character Donkor has portrayed through Amma — everyone has good and bad in them; everyone has their own struggles — is something that I liked. It was intellectually stimulating.

Didn’t Nana and Doctor Otuo feel boxed in or too small here? Why did the cars pass right in front of the house – where was the perimeter wall? The swimming pool? Also unlike House, she doesn't appear to have any sympathy for the down and out, believing that people who are "losers" are just unwilling to do what it takes to get ahead. I enjoyed reading this book. It’s not earth-shattering and there really aren’t any tense highs (or lows), but to be honest, I’m starting to enjoy this kind of book a lot more than the other kind. The story is slow and is difficult to follow. I finally started to know what was going on after 25% of the story. I liked the characters, their diversity in class and well as opinions. The language, especially the ones with Ghanian dialect slowed me down a lot, and honestly, I found it unnecessary and somewhat annoying.Housegirl is a story of female friendship, coming-of-age, and claiming one’s identity. It is slower-moving, but a worthwhile effort overall due to immersive culture and well-drawn characters. Amber becomes the patient in Wilson's Heart (where, according to her admission bracelet, she was admitted on March 12, 2007), wherein she experiences multiple organ failures as the disease progresses. The cause is revealed to be amantadine poisoning, as the crash destroyed her kidneys, and she was unable to process the medication she was taking for the flu - amantadine was left to circulate in her system for more than a day, damaging all major organs (eventually leading to the cardiac episode in the ambulance), and making her ineligible for transplantation in the process. At the end of the episode, she died in Wilson's arms as the machines were shut down, and her death left him devastated. The spokesman said: "Officers attended along with ambulance colleagues. A 19-year-old woman was found suffering stab injuries and she was pronounced dead at the scene."

The Girl Before follows two women who live in the same house three years apart, under strict conditions prescribed by the architect of the house. Like the facade, many of the interior furnishings that appear in the series – including the sofa, dining table and the fatal cantilevered stairs – were also built by the production team. The team found an existing plot of land on which to build the facade of the house as seen in the series, though the interiors were shot at Bottle Yard Studios. The writing is sometimes poignant, sometimes difficult to get into, with a pidgin that’s hard to follow, although when you figure out the rules, it makes it easier. The glossary of terms at the start of the book also helps to make things easier, but Michael Donkor doesn’t feed you with a word for word translation. He aims to tell a story, not teach you linguistics and language.

Belinda is completely overwhelmed by London – the noises, the colour, the traffic, the people – all so very different. Amma and Mary are the other two main characters, and Amma even gets her own POV. She’s a lesbian struggling to fit into the heteronormative Ghanaian society of London. She’s tired of her life, and while not a likeable character (bc let’s face it, compared to Belinda who was outcast in her village because of her mother’s profession, and then was essentially an indentured labourer, Amma has led a pretty entitled life), her struggles with coming out made it so easy to empathise with her. (Again, an #ownvoices narration.) Belinda is a teenage Ghanaian village girl, sold by her mother into bonded labour as a servant girl in a big house. The owners of that house, Aunty and Uncle, then sell Belinda on to a Ghanaian family living in London to be a good influence on their wayward daughter Amma.
