There is almost no magic in the book which was so unexpected and disappointing. Magic was all talk, it just made story atmospheric. What’s the point of magical island if I’m going to see the magic only at the end when the mystery is unraveled!!

Spells for Forgetting by Adrienne Young ARC Book Review | Spells for Forgetting by Adrienne Young

Mystery, twist and turns are good but I wasn’t surprised with most of the revelations. Like I said, I knew August was innocent, whatever happened with Lilly was related to him and Emery, and the magic is part of whatever happened… all surprises for me was in ‘hows’ and ‘whys’ that was revealed after the climax in last few chapters. It was most interesting part. I was curious to see what characters are going to do with the truth at the end and to my biggest disappointment it turned out very anti-climatic. It didn’t satisfy me and I was annoyed. The next thing I loved was the excellent world building. Author, Young has got real talent for creating an almost realistic environment with some magical elements. You can just taste the salt in the air and smell the herbs from the apothecary. An island off the Washington coast welcomes tourists Spring through Fall with its abundant apple orchards planted centuries ago. It's what keeps the island alive. Quaint shops, rumors of folklore and ancestral magic are additional lures calling out to curious visitors. Every autumn, when the crowds filled Main Street, I would watch out the window of my mother's shop and imagine him appearing in the stream of faces. More than once, I even thought I saw him. It took longer than I wanted to admit for me to realize that I couldn't cut him from me. That some part of him had been fused to places I couldn't even see.”On the positive side, the atmosphere of the book is great, excellent even. Adrienne Young's lush prose painted a serious, slightly eerie landscape of the island, which I highly appreciated. It's a shame that the rest appears very lukewarm to me. The sequel to It Ends With Us (2016) shows the aftermath of domestic violence through the eyes of a single mother.

One of the common things that many people looking for these forgetful spells want to forget are lost, lovers. Because you shared such intimate parts of your life with someone, it may be a huge challenge for you to get them off your mind even though it is in the best of your interest to do so. Sometimes all you want to learn is how to make someone forget you. All these are problems that such spells can help you to solve. Abuse of an erase memory spell The magical realism captured in the story aids in subtly highlighting the strange beliefs the families hold dear and enhances the flavor of the moodiness that the author has wonderfully created. One can feel the autumn winds and the coming winter in the author's beautiful writing. Told thru multiple points of view interweaving the past and the present with romance, deception, secrets, and lies, Spells For Forgetting has everything and more. Emery and August were such wonderful characters, both unable to move on and forget the love they shared, learning to trust each other the second time, and with the kind of past that hangs over their heads, it was particularly beguiling in intensity. With Emery determined to find the truth of their friend Lily’s death, the layers in the story untangle in bits and pieces luring the reader to read a little more to get to that unexpected ending. Breathless excitement this one and fingers crossed I can get to the much acclaimed Fable that much sooner.

But he wasn’t just a college roommate. He was a friend. Maybe the only one I had. He was also the only person I’d ever told about Saoirse Island, even if I’d never uttered a word about what happened there. “I mean it. Thanks.” Fold the paper several times until it's very small. As you do this, empty your mind and ask your Higher Self to let go of that person, releasing them forever. I'd been in love with August Salt since before I knew what the words meant. I don't know when it happened - the narrow space between seconds, when a spark like the birth of a hundred stars found a home in my blood. Since then, every day had been colored with the glittering light of it dragging me in its wake, pulling me beneath its surface. And I didn't care. If this was what it was like to drown, then for the rest of my life, I didn't want to take another sip of air.”

Forgetful Spells: How To Use Them To Cope With Trauma Forgetful Spells: How To Use Them To Cope With Trauma

From the first sentence, the reader is transported to Saoirse, a mystical island located off the coast of Seattle, Oregon. It’s steeped in folklore, the locals secretive and protective of the island and the orchard that provides the island’s survival. They begrudgingly endure the seasonal tourists who visit, knowing they provide the much-needed income that allows the island to stay as it is.At times, I'd even felt like that one memory was the only thing that was keeping me breathing. And there were a million times after I left Saoirse that I wished to God it never happened.” I really enjoyed Fable, so I was very excited to get this book on Netgalley. This is Adrienne Young's first adult book, but the core of the story is very YA, and the book seems confused about what it wants to be. Is it a mystery? Magical realism? It doesn't do either well, so I ended up disappointed. You may like this book if you enjoy atmospheric reads. The problem is that there's not much under the surface. I want to say this book is actually good. I thought the story was intriguing enough to let me finish the book. It’s definitely one of those books that gets better as it progresses but might bore you a bit for a while. The setting of Saoirse island is the best part. It gives gothic feel. Magic runs deep in the island. It was interesting to read about legends, superstitions, and how magic worked and how only women on the island have magic in their blood. Island has small tight-knit secretive community, who didn’t like outsiders or tourists even though their life depends on them. They takes care of their own and like to keep things unchanged and old-fashioned. Everyone is in everyone else’s business, there are no secrets, lots of gossip, prying eyes and nature that might make one feel suffocating and even worse if you get on people’s wrong side. I didn’t understand the mindset of people half the time but it’s the people who made the story eerie and creepy more than the island itself. Though her mouth wasn’t visible behind the scarf, I could see the frown in her eyes and the look edged too close to suspicion. I’d been given that look many times before.

Spells for Forgetting by Adrienne Young | Waterstones

There were tales that only the island knew. Ones that had never been told. I knew, because I was one of them.’ It’s really slow to the point that I was very close to skipping chapters and read last few chapters so I finally can get to the point. im so impressed with this novel and i cant wait to reread it when it comes out just in time for spooky season! The plot is pretty simple, yes there is murder mystery who dun it type of story but it felt really simple and the plot moved so slow until almost 70% of the story, the characters act and think immature (gah i really dislike Emery) and there are too many POVs and changing so often that felt too similiar in narrative thus make me cannot seperate who is who and everything started to blend Many thanks to Random House Publishing Group Ballantine and NetGalley for providing me with this digital advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. This review is my own, honest thoughts about this book.I am always skeptical when a YA author ventures into the adult territory because it might be a source of tone problems, and unfortunately it was the case with this book. The main characters (August, Emery, Dutch) are in their mid-thirties, but their voice still sounds very young to me. Additionally, the voice of the side characters (who are slightly older) almost blends in, which renders the story very monotonic. A book begging to be read on the beach, with the sun warming the sand and salt in the air: pure escapism. I bit down, following the stark outline of the island with my eyes until it disappeared into the sea. There were a hundred different ones I could think of, but only one I gave a shit about. I’d grown up being told that the people on the mainland were different from us, but living among them was the first time I really understood it. Mom had gotten better through the years at blending in and appearing at first glance like other mothers. But she still spent the equinox in the woods and the solstice at the sea. She still whispered old words over her teacups and I’d caught her muttering a curse as we passed the front door of our neighbor’s house more than once. I want to thank the publisher "Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine" for the wonderful opportunity to read this novel and any thoughts or opinions expressed are unbiased and mine alone!
